John mentioned the geometry of top three leaves. I'm confused why 2 of your 3 top leaves are curved. The top 3 leaves should all be straight, or all be curved, but not a mix of the two.

Good call there, I have no answer for you. I just checked Steve's really amazing photos of his spring, and his have the same thing (top three leaves are straight, others are curved). I'm assuming this has to do with my spring not being an original.

I did, however, measure the unsprung height of the spring, and found it to be very close to 10". So, I think the HEALTH of my spring is OK. I'm sure the judges will find some configuration things wrong with it though. I wonder how many out of the 5 originality points I'll lose. Probably none at chapter and 1-3 at regional / national would be my guess.

      Points deduct

      Chris,

If you were to replace the liners with correct (Quanta) H-profile ones, I don't think you would lose any points during judging, even at a National. The curved upper 2 leaves will almost certainly not be detectable with the spring installed and fully loaded.

John, I was just referring to the liners from Quanta. I did my 63 spring last fall. It took several phone calls to them after the liners arrived to convince them the 63 liner set was different than the 64 to 67 set. They kept trying to tell me that 63 and 67 was the same. They also said that they never had a return call about the liners being different.

All the calls were pleasant and they did send me 1 extra line to cut to fit the 63 configuration.

            David Duell,

I've a son who is 6'8" and 270# that you'd have to get thru, to negotiate the trade you've suggested. Others have tried and failed!!!

              Stephen,
So if I'm reading this correctly, what you're saying is we almost have a done deal here? Alrighty then.....one last thing. Have you explained to your son the impossibilities for someone that large to get ANY work done under the dash? I'm a mere 6'4" and 235# and have severe difficulties. Sure you say, he could just rip the roof off or flip the car on it's side, if the need arises, but then I ask, what fun is driving it that way?
              Anyways.....
It's still not toooooo late, so I'll leave the offer as pending, 'till I hear back something definite......

I think the best reproduction out there is made by Eaton Detroit Spring (www.eatonsprings.com); order it unpainted, get the Quanta kit (paint and liners), take the spring apart, paint it, re-assemble, and install. That's where I got mine. They have both versions (the '63 with all nine leaves cambered, and '64-'67 with the top three leaves flat and the bottom six cambered).

Thanks John, I'll give them a call tomorrow.
