Interesting thread, Brandon,...and that's one of the best looking '87 pickups I've seen in a while.
Like Jay, I've been into Chevelle Super Sports since buying my first car at age 15, in 1969. Drove a Chevelle SS396 all thru high school, and have owned more of them thru the past 40 years, than I can count on two hands.
Here's a few pics of my current 1966 Chevelle SS396, purchased as another "barn find" in 2001. Shows 48,000 miles on the odometer, and sitting on it's original ball joints. It was a California delivered smog pump AIR car, and is rare in the fact it's an original four speed, with factory air conditioning. I've put 5,000 miles on her in the last 8 years, driving every week (weather permitting) to car cruise night. As with all my cars, she was built to drive and have fun with. Ridge

Thanks Jay! You and I are about the same age, so I'm sure you'll know what I mean when I say....everytime I get that car on the road, it makes me feel young again. Looking at this year's headline news, I miss those days so bady (the late 1960s into the 1970s).
I noticed in your personal info that you have a '67 Corvette. We share the same love of these old steel bodied bigblocks, in addition to the classic lines of a midyear Corvette. I have a '67 convertible Corvette myself. If you ever get thru Tulsa, Oklahoma, please look me up, stop by, and we'll go out and smoke the tires on the SS a little. Ridge

p.s. in all my former Chevelles, I only had one rag-top, but it was a low horsepower '71. Love the rag-tops.

Mike, seems to me I once heard, and read, a story about an Oldsmobile of that vintage that you had. How's your old universal joints?

have two Oldsmobiles, a 1950 98 holiday hardtop, all original except for the 394 ci engine. it'll run effortlessly@ 110 mph, half throttle. the other Olds , which i just finished, is a 1957 station wagon, aka Fiesta. its a 88 4 door post, black with red accent line. original 371 ci with owner(me who would never add options to a Corvette, honest) added PS, PB, Wonderbar and J-2 setup. i added factory air to the beast but when it came time to install the 3x2's batwing(first design) aircleaner, i discovered the batwing and the AC evaporator box were incompatable( the reason a 2nd desing J-2 aircleaner was introduced in mid 1957 model year). liking the looks of the batwing, i removed the factory AC. i plan on hooking the Fiesta to an open trailer with my black 57 FI Vette onboard and hauling the pair to the local drag strip. Damn, i wish it were 1961 again. Unlike the Dipstick of Lyle, i've never had u-joint problems, just the hand joints.mike

The one piece windshield was substituted for the two piece on many 49 (and 50) Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs (and Chevies). I did several myself, even after breaking one on my first attempt. They were plentiful in junk yards and soon became the "cool" way to go. Put one in a 49 Pontiac along with a 50 Olds engine and a LaSalle tranny. As I recall, we used the cross member and clutch linkage from a stick shift Poncho and only had to weld in a simple plate for the front mount. The car was pretty rough looking and guys would pull up next to it and exclaim; "Ha! Silver Streak! Silver Streak of Crap!" or words to that effect - until we blew their doors off. The thing would wind out forever.

I was thinking about the 1950, although I couldn't recall the details. I remember a story in The Restorer -- and I thought there was a universal joint issue associated with THAT story. This was long before you and the Dipstick had your own brand of fun. Back when NCRS meets took place over the pick-em-up tailgate and we all kicked the tires -- as opposed to now days when we are closer to kicking the bucket.

                            Mike:

Yes, its a 1950. The line "the hottest thing around in '49-'50" got truncated and the "'50" shows up at the bottom of the pic.
Won second place at the National OCA in the late '70s
Original 303...when they put the V-8 in this Chevy A-body in 1949, nothing in our neighborhood could touch it not even a Hudson Hornet.

The early Olds V8's really performed with a stick shift behind them. My brother-in-law had a 49 with the stick and he still talks about it until today. Like I mentioned with the LaSalle tranny, they would wind out like crazy!

The '67 Camaro SS/RS was originally an L35 4-speed that I bought new and drag raced in several configurations through 1981. Sits in my shop in this condition today. The '68 Nova SS is a new aquision. Originally an L78 4-speed, radio delete car. I've known this car from new, but lost track of it for about 34 years. Has been a drag race car since new, with only 2557 miles on it. Plans are to race it as a "Nostalgia Super Stocker.
