    69 Engine Pad

For all you experts that attended Al Grenning's tech session at the Lone Star Regional I would ask you to look at this Pad Stamp and give me your opinion if it is real/correct.

I am looking at a project and need your opinion before I spend the time to perform a visual check to determine the cylinder case number and casting date.

It is suppose to be an August 69 400/427 tri-power car.

    Thanks.

I am no expert on 69 stamps or fonts on 69's, but if these fonts appear typical, you will have to see the bare surface to make an educated decision on the authenticity of this stamp.

VIN is consistant with an August built and code is correct for 400HP with transistor ignition and 4 speed.

Car is 2,000 miles away. Wanted to be warm and fuzzy before I take the trip.

Does the stampings look good? I didn't like the "6" in the assembly code.

I'm doing a august 69 L-89 and the serial # is in the 28,0000 range so that seems to line up nicely. I have seen the straight back 6's many times but can't tell you if they are june of 69 correct. One thing for sure I would not travel there untill the owner removes the paint from the pad with lacquer thinner and sends you detailed up close photos.

The freshly repainted pad is screaming... "strip this paint off of me because I have a secret" !!

Actually that 6 looks ok to me. Here's a picture of my 69 pad.

At a recent meet Mr Grenning would not even judge a pad that had been painted. He was very accommodating and allowed the owner to remove the paint.

                        Dennis,

Are those the famous broach marks running in the same direction as the numbers? I've heard a lot about them, but am still struggling to be able to see them.

Hmm...I'm not sure which direction you're meaning, but broach marks run parallel with the direction of the camshaft, i.e. from front of the block to rear of the block.

Yep, that's what I meant, from front to back of the block.
