    64 Z-06

Been a while since I was here, so please bear with me.

OK..................don't everybody jump on me at once!! I know GM never offered the Z-06 option in 64 (well actually they did, VERY early in the year, and for only a short time). However, beginning in late January or early February 1964, the same Z-06 brake package became available for 64 Corvettes as option J-56, offered only with other "mandatory" options L-84 fuel injection and F-40 heavy duty suspension. The J-56 brake option consisted of the heavy duty sintered metallic brake linings with huge finned drums and vented backing plates.................................ALL of which were leftover from the Z-06 package in 1963.

Now...................to the reason for this post. Fortunately, and with a bit of luck, I have one of these 64 J-56 Corvettes and would like to converse with other 64 J-56 owners. However, this may be somewhat difficult as Chevrolet made only 29 such cars in 64 out of a total production of 22,229. This low production number, coupled with the fact that these cars are now 45 years old and the probability of all 29 surviving being extremely unlikely, my chances of finding someone on the forum who has one is slim. But, you never know until you try. So, with all this said......................are there any other 64 J-56 Corvette owners out there?

Anxiously waiting to hear from you!!!

    Thanks,
    Rex

Rex, I have a customer with an original 64 Z06/J56 car. Email me (not here) with your email address and I will pass it on to see if he will converse with you. I am restoring the FI unit on it now. I have to be careful and protect the privacy of my customers as you well know. Thanks, John

Rex, There was a red coupe at the NCRS regional in Killeen this month. Check with some of the TX chapter members and see if you can get contact info. Good luck, Bill

          Rex,

If memory serves me there was a 64 Big Brake Big Tank car in the 89 special collection (a dark color I think) And later I believe that same car was owned by Jack Murry in the 90's or he was trying to sell it for someone.

                Bill, Rex --- here's a red/red '64 J56 / FI tanker that was on eBay on 1st Dec 2005. VIN 03161.

And what about that black/black (at least that's what it looks like in a b/w photo [maybe Daytona/dark blue ?]) with FI J56 KO's in those two magazine road tests back in '64 (was the same car, probably) -- anybody know the VIN ?

Car is black on silver (VIN 12131) also a tanker; Jack Murray showed at Bloomington special collection in 1987, and again in 1995. Claims one of the earliest documented sets of KO's. Has all the paperwork.

                    Wayne, Rex,
You might get in touch with Mike Hanson. Mike is very farmilar with Vance Shapley's (SP?) old '64, (which he sold some time ago). This is a blk-blk car with factory KO's and paperwork. Car sold new in Bartlesville, OK. I used to see it on the street often. Bill

Wayne, I have the magazines and have to dig them out. The Corvette and a red/white interior Cobra were on the cover of one with a comparison.

Rex -- let's not forget the roadsters. Going through my collection of Bloomington Special Collection booklets, in 1987 I see an FI convertible (silver blue IIRC; I've got a pic somewhere). (then) current owner is (was) John Danos -- shouldn't be too hard to locate.

Steve -- I think I just answered my own question as to the VIN. I have that magazine Car Life, August 1964 article that has a roadtest of the '64 black/black J56, and also a comparison with the Cobra.

That '64 has the same California manufacturer's plate as the black/black car used for the September 1964 Motor Trend road test.

(note to Michael Hanson ... this is the review with that shot of the car on a lift with the horrible black coating splashed everywhere on the chassis )

At the 1986 Bloomington Gold Special Collection, (then/now ?) owner is Vernie Thomas of Danville IL. Confirms the car was "tested by Motor Trend at Riverside International Raceway and it apeared in the September '64 issue of the magazine" So it's VIN is 15038.

Yup, that horrible black coating splashed on everything! Drips and runs everywhere! I sure hope all the new C2's didn't look like that on the bottom, did they?

Wayne, as I recall it was a Harry Mann car.
