    Re: 64 Z-06

Jiust to set the record straight, I'm not aware that Z-06 was available anytime during the 1964 model year. All the components of the 1963 Z-06 Special Performance Equipment Package, both the first and second iteration (which was released in Feb. '63 and deleted the big tank and KO wheels from Z-06) were unbundled and available as separate stand alone options for 1964 without restriction other than the N-03 36.5 gallon fuel tank could not be ordered on a convertible.

If you wanted to order a base 250 HP Coupe wih PG and air conditioning, you could have added J-56 and/or N-03 or any of the other former Z-06 components that were available as separate options.

At the begining of the 64 model year, the Z06 option was still listed and available. (no tank or KO wheels) The option was deleted not long after intro of 64 and became separate options.

In either '82 or '89 at Bend Oregon (I think), I spent some time on the grass under what I recall was a saddle tan CV with the correct equipment.

              Re: 64 Z-06

I am aware of the cars that have been mentioned here and have personally viewed most of them. I know of 3 roadsters, all of which I believe are real cars..............the silver blue one that was featured in one of the Corvette mags a few years ago (can't remember which magazine), the tan tan roadster and, a satin silver with blue leather convertible that I owned back in the late 90's. That car was VERY rough, rusty frame, wrong engine, hot rodded most of its life, always from Ohio. However, I do believe that it was a real car because all the J-56 brake stuff, with the exception of the shoes, was on the car when I got it and the car was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too rough for anyone in their right mind to retro fit the valuable J-56 brake parts on the car. I sold the car to a guy in NY and when he removed the body, the frame was so rusty that it collapsed................and yes he did know about all the car's problems. Silver and blue would have been a beautiful combo. I heard of a red roadster in ALA a few years back, but could never track it down.

I saw Vance Shappley's car (identical to mine except his had a 36 tank) at the Bloomington auction a couple years back. He ran it through with his Sebring silver 63 Z-06 tanker and the pair was bid to $875K but did not sell. I think his reserve was $1 million for the pair.

Thanks for everyone's input thus far. I was just curious about any other of these "unusual" cars that might still be around. Sounds like several have survived. Any other information would be much appreciated.

              Thanks,
              Rex

                  Loren,

That 64 was saddle with tan leather, the guy was from CA and worked at one of the Universities there. I believe his 1st name was "Tim", I had his business card for a long time but with my moves apparently it is either misplaced or lost forever

According to Noland Adams' book (The Complete Corvette Restoration & Technical Guide Vol. 2, pg 221, J-56 section), option J-56 did not become available to customers until late January 1964. I've seen a couple of very early 64's with the brake package and then nothing until cars with serial numbers that coincide with the late January 64 release date for J-56.

                      JB:
If that was when you had the '56 SR car at Bend, that would make it 1989.
I also seem to recall that the car was supposedly used for some sort of tech judging/judging guidance session for those who are now referred to as "Observer Judges" - if that memory is correct, maybe CC or one of the coordinators from the Northwest chapter might remember the name.

As mentioned previously, I think the early option was called Z06, just like late 63. Then it was dropped and J56 replaced it. The other items had to be ordered separately.

I'm still looking for the paperwork on this. I know it's here because I dug it out a few years ago to answer the same question for someone.

Do you recall how long option Z-06 was offered in 64 before it was dropped?

                          Thanks,

                            Rex,

I only remember that Z06 wasn't listed for 64 for very long. I just don't remember what stack of paperwork that information/change was shown in. I've already searched through several without success. If/when I find it, I'll post it here.

Rex, the fellow I bought my '57 from bought his friend's '64 FI, P-48, suspension coupe when his friend ordered a like '65. The previous owner of my '57 is tracking down info. on the '64 as it may have had the brakes, also. I believe the '64 and '65 were each very early cars. When I get the info. I will post.

                                Regards,
