    65 electrical problem

I just started having a problem with my 65. While driving over the weekend, the power shut down completely. After I stopped, the power would come back on after about a minute. It did it 5 times. The only thing I looked at was my battery connections....they were good. New battery. Any suggestions on where to look first? Thanks, Andy

Possibly a bad ballast resistor or a faulty coil or coil connection ???????

      Andy,
When you state, "power shut down completely", do you describe the engine shutting down, or losing all electrical function (lights, gages, radio, etc)?

            Thanks guys.
No recent repairs.........ALL power shut down......the way I know it is hot again is when the clock starts tickin.

I'm with Wayne, check the bulkhead connection.

                Re: 65 electrical problem

Intermittent electrical problems can be very difficult to diagnose sometimes, especially if you only get about one minute before the problem "corrects itself". The bulkhead connector is a great place to start if your losing all power to the inside of the car, but it would make me have a "few more" questions about exactly what you experience when this problem shows itself. Such as:
Do you do anything such as inspect connections or wiggle wires when it is not working, or do you just wait to see the clock running again?
How long does it run before the problem reoccurs?
Is the wiring in the car original or has it been replaced at some time, and if so was that recently?
While you may have to spend some time on this to figure out exactly where the problem is coming from, you should be able to start at the battery and methodically work your way through the electrical system (a wiring diagram would be very beneficial). Also , the best time to find something you believe to be the cause is when it is malfunctioning, but with only about one minute this can severely limit what you are able to check in this time. I could come up with quite a few more questions, but will leave it at this for now as not to get too confusing.

I had this problem in the past. It was always the bulkhead connection. I finaly took it loose, cleaned everything, adjusted the pins slightly, and the problem went away.

                      Andy,
I had the same problem and have not had it for years now since I took a real small screw and went up under the connection and screwed it to the bulk head. Good luck.

Not to sound stupid....but where is this located and how did you do it again?

The connector is right on the firewall where the fusebox wires pass through. Driver's side.

Look at the wiring where the steering column comes thru the bulkhead, it's just outboard of the column

The harness connectors to be inspected and cleaned are on the engine compartment side of the fuse block; be careful not to break the plastic lock tangs.
