Mechanical Engineer, FLTSATCOM System Program Office, Space and Missile Systems Organization (SAMSO) Los Angeles Air Force Station, El Segundo, California (affectionatey known as "The Hollywood Air Force"), 1974-1979

Yesterday, I stopped by to wish a Happy Veteran's Day to my 80-something neighbor up the block, "Fuzz" Nash. He was a landing craft coxswain (USN) off an attack transport at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

My late father was Army Ordnance Corps during WW II and spent time at Aberdeen Proving Ground in tank development and various auto plants as a production engineer for military equipment. Prior to the War he was with the Pontiac Sales and Service organization and was Portland Zone Manager when he was called to active duty in 1942.

                              Re: Veterans Day

A heartfelt "Thank You" goes out to each of the veterans for their service to our country!!

Yesterday my wife and I along with 51 other "guardians" from central Illinois were HONORED to spend Veterans Day with 53 WWII Veterans who participated in an Honor Flight to Washington DC. For those not familiar with the Honor Flight program it was set up to honor and give our WWII veterans the "Welcome Home" they so rightly deserve 60 years overdue. The program has been in existence I believe for about 5 years. This is the 1st year for the Central Illinois Honor Flight and in the 7 flights they took this year they were able to take some 330 WWII veterans to DC to tour the memorials built to honor our veterans. For us personally it was such an honor and overwhelming experience to spend the day (almost 21 hours, it started with a bus ride from Effingham at 3:00a.m. Wed and returning about midnight) with this group from the "Greatest Generation"!! The majority of the veterans and guardians had not met each other before the trip but by the end of the day it was as though we had known one another forever. I would encourage EVERYONE if possible to contact their local Honor Guard chapter to take this trip. It is an experience of a lifetime and one you can cherish forever. But better yet you will ensure a WWII veteran gets a chance to see the WWII Memorial that was built in their honor. GOD BLESS EACH OF OUR VETERANS!!

PS The veterans cost of this trip is paid for ENTIRELY from donations. If you know of a WWII veteran PLEASE put them in contact of your local Honor Flight to take this trip. We are losing over 1000 of them each day.
