i was recently advised my dipstick tube was incorrect because it was a natural finish instead of a semi-gloss black finish - my 4th edition of the judging manual says unfinished - but the second printing says semi-gloss black does anyone know what it should be to meet NCRS requirements? I have a 327/350 L79 motor Thanks Jim

Re: NCRS question
Chuck & Gene - well i agree with you both BUT - The NEW fourth edition of our 67 JM says Semi-Gloss Black
and we just had our car judged at the Regional Meet in Kissimmee, Fl and you guessed it got dinged for natural finish - So - I guess it gets painted Semi-Gloss Black - trying to achieve 98% in the National Meet this year. Thanks for your inputs - Jim

We also had our car judged at Kissimmee and got hit for the handle not being black. I asked the judges if the whole thing was to be black and they told me that just the dipstick handle should be painted. It is possible that we may have two different judges with two different ideas of what it should be. Its easier to paint the handle so I think we will try that and see what happens at the next show. Ill let you know.

Re: NCRS question
People restoring their Corvette by the JM (MUST) get it judged before any new JM comes out or they have to go back and redo many items they thought was correct/
I'm not saying it's wrong to improve the JM's but Corvettes that got awards years ago now are wrong in many ways. Each new addition just cost people more money and time to keep up.
My 67 top flighted in the 90's is now if judged is a third flight Corvette. Which means looking at a top flight Corvette judged years ago doesn't mean much any more.

Re: NCRS question
Top Flight, even last week, doesn't mean too much today -- for a whole lot of reasons. The JM is not a "put tab A into slot B" kind of book. In addition to the JM and AIM folks have to do their homework to determine what is correct for their car.Terry- Top

Re: NCRS question
That's why if I'm looking to buy a Corvette I don't put much value in to the fact it got a top flight. It's up to me to know what I'm buying and I'm not trying to bad mouth NCRS in any way by saying this!

Re: NCRS question
Chuck - i am really new at how to reply to threads so i might be doing this wrong - but here is what is real confusing (mind you i am not complaining) is i worked off a 4th edition for the chapter meet in Howey and points were deducted for our tube being natural and that is where the whole issue came up - we left natural - and at the regional in Kissmmee was told the NEW 4th edition 2nd printing shows semi gloss black for the tube - so you guessed it a deduction. I left our handle natural with the black tip plug in the end of the finger hole. somehow maybe NCRS can shoot out a bulletin with the updates - even b4 a new printing comes out.Hi Jim,

Re: NCRS question
I Just think maybe with NCRS's help our members might have a better chance of restoring their cars - I did not take the issue personal but did find it confusing when one edition for the 4th edition showed natural and the NEW edition of the 4th edition shows semi-gloss black. I have truly enjoyed restoring our car so far and have done alot of homework that is why i try to ask as many questions as possible of people like yourself who have way more knowledge then i do. Maybe we the membership can come up some way to have a centralized database/Judging manual which only NCRS members could access. Just a thought
I really believe everyone appreciates the Great Job NCRS does along with all of it's volunteers.- Top

Re: NCRS question
I hear you, but it sounds to me like Jim did exactly that, and got it right...but got a deduct for his trouble. What concerns me more is that we have people judging cars by the JM, when THEY should have done THEIR homework.
