    T-10 Transmission search

I thought I would just put this out there in case anyone searching these posts happened to have or know where my original T-10 Warner 4 speed transmission might be. VIN on the car is 20867S102550 and I would be delighted to purchase this transmission if anyone can find it. I am attempting to restore my deceased brother's 1962 Corvette as a tribute to his life and accomplishments. Any thoughts or suggestions on where to search would also be helpful.
Thank you for your considerations in advance.

I would say you are searching for needle in a haystack, but you never know. Be careful of someone trying to get big bucks for a restamp. I would probably try the JTPiper website. They seem to have a whole lot of transmissions. (4 speeds by Darrel). Good Luck!

      Re: T-10 Transmission search

I posted the following email to Darrell at the JTPiper web site:
I come to you via the NCRS recommendation.

I am in the process of restoring my deceased brother's 1962 Corvette.
After removing what I thought was the original T-10 transmission it has come to my attention that it is actually a 1960 T-10 with cast iron case and aluminum tailstock, which makes it the incorrect transmission for this car.

I am in search of the original T-10 for this car with VIN 20867S102550 which I realize will be very difficult to find, but thought it worth asking for.

If unable to find the original T-10 I am inquiring if you might have a suitable replacement T-10 for the car.
I would be willing to trade the 1960 T-10 that I have for a correctly dated replacement unit or purchase the replacement outright. The engine stamp is also shown in an attached picture. This transmission that I have is in good working order as far as I know. It has some stress cracking as witnessed by the attached pictures and one of the fingers on the reverse lockout release has been repaired at some time but overall appears to be solid.

Any help that you can offer would be very much appreciated as this car is to be a testimonial to the life and accomplishments of my brother Peter.

And just received the following reply:
      Hello David,

We can help with this restoration, we have a WK 2012 which is an Oct. 20-1961, 4 speed. It has no vin stamp, we can stamp your vin # in it. Please give me a call 1-800-637-6111 ask for Darrell.

      Thanks,
      4speedsby Darrell

        What's to comment on?

Darrell has a reputation for making Top Drawer trannies. He's saying he can build you a nice, date matching, replacement for your car's factory original.

Other than that, why not call and talk? He won't bite! But, don't expect bargain basement prices because Darrell sells based on his reputation...

just so you do not have a heart attack when they quote the price here is a example. He paid some NCRS "expert" almost $8000 for this trans, and the guy could not even make it leak-free! this is a quote from another corvette website

Are you saying that Darrell could not make it leak free?
I just talked to him and he quoted me a complete rebuilt 62 T-10 date coded October 62 for $2375. My '60 T-10 worth $650-750 on trade.

I wanted to pass along my experence with Darrell, as he built the T-10 for my 63 and supplied the front case. I supplied the rest of the parts including the main shaft and NOS input and counter shaft with all new second and third gears. The only gear he used over is first because there was not much wear in the engagement teeth.

The transmission is nice and tight and I am happy with the communication and more importantly his workmanship.. No leaks, no problems and a great guy to talk to over the phone. No problems with Darrell, I believe he is a honest guy and he did a great job on my transmission..

David....did you mean "dated october 61 ".....just checking....62 would be a costly mistake for your early VIN if you're going original numbers

And our local chapter Technical Advisor mentioned hearing of late '57 owner who forked out $13500 for a correct/original cast iron/aluminum T-10 recently!!!

Another thought has come to mind on this subject.
I am reading in the archives about some people who have a 1962 T-10 tramsmission in their 1960 Corvette and I wondered if those people or others with the incorrect t-10 might be interested in a trade of some sort with me for my 1960 T-10. Then we would both have a correctly dated T-10 in our cars.
                        Just a thought...

See, like this one is on Ebay right now with the serial number of the car it came out of.
Maybe the owner of this Corvette would like his original 4 speed back.

I thought that transmission numbers were not part of the judging process?

just thought I'd mention another transmission place that does good work and wasn't expensive. He has a booth at Carlisle every year Lenski Trans. out of Merrick NY 516-867-5630 owner is Leonard Jaworowski.
