Would probably be a little tougher without the windows in the door.

Jeff, I use a bolt through a hole in the track. The bolt prevents the door from being raised and if it does go up the alarm goes off.

My warehouse doors are latched and alarmed from the inside, but at my home we use the automatic door openers.

the wife will simply not tolerate me locking down her doors.

That's one of the reasons I have none in my door, along with stopping prying eyes.

I guess you could prevent this by immobilizing the latch?

My unit has a magnetic lock that goes through the track when closed.
You could ty-wrap the manual opener handel so you could not pull it down.

Buy good insurance, You only keep kids or rookies out . If a pro wants in outside of a good alarm to let someone know & if they are very good that will not stop them. Locks only stop honest people from getting in. A 357 pistol or a 12 gage shotgun is also good if you are home.

I just went to my garage and safety-wired the latch mechanism in the latched position. If I need to get out manually, I'll just cut the wire. Never thought of this. Thanks for the post.

Suppose the Fire Department has to get in? That is what that latch is for.
Some put the cable from that latch to a keylock on the outside of the door, if the door is the only entrance to the garage.

No. That's not what the latch is for. The latch is to disconnect the door so you can open it in the event of a power outage. All it does is disconnect the door hardware from the electrically powered drive mechanism.

If the fire department wants in they will use the method they always use, ie, a chain saw. I've seen then do it many times, and they seem to love it.

If I need to open mine now that the latch is safety wired, I'll just grab a wire cutter... you won't open it with a freakin' coat hanger...

Re: Breaking into a Garage in 6 seconds?

Not only does my Overhead door not have windows, it doesn't have the type of lever shown in the video. Mine just has a "blade" that goes straight up and down, which would almost be impossible to pull down from the outside. It's hard for me to pull the blade down on the inside, because there's pressure on the door arm while it's closed.

No way I could imagine breaking into my garage as shown on the video.

When the fire department wants in, they have all kinds of special tools and toys which they also practice with for profecient use in a rapid manner.

Nope. We use a chain saw on wood doors or a rescue saw on metal doors. Noisy as hell but the complete door will be laying on the ground in about 10 seconds.

You can disable the manual latch by replacing the small spring with a tight wire loop. This would also disable the ability to use the latch, a little inconvenience, but it would make it more difficult to open from the outside asin the movie.
