    Re: Ebay Change

Good tips. I have been an Ebay seller and buyer since 98 and have seen many changes. My two major gripes as a seller are the Pay Pal requirement and posting the shipping cost ahead of time. I have gone the round trip with Ebay, they seam to think I know in advance where the winning bidder lives and how much it will cost to ship there item. Ebay says give the winning bidder free shipping but this means extra fees for the seller on out of pocket shipping costs. Posted shipping cost is not charged fees by Ebay. All these fees add up to higher asking prices on buy it now items. The Pay Pal requirement is simple; Ebay bought the company a few years ago and requires all Ebay sellers to use it for there winning bidders or buy it now buyers. There is an advantage to the buyer though, faster shipping and buyer protection via Pay Pal. There is little advantage to the seller but a fast payment to the sellers account. Beware if you get a complaint from the buyer after the sale; Pay Pal will stop payment at once and leave you the seller to deal with the buyer. I use a second checking account for Pay Pal with the credit card requirement for back up only; Ebay requires a credit card back up payment method on all accounts. Search is fairly simple once you know how to use Ebay. I have seen a big change over the past couple of years with all the buy it now and or make offer listings. One comment on buy it now, if you do not search you may miss out on a hard to find NOS part you have been looking for. I now seldom sell on Ebay because of the seller changes. I still bid though but not as often as I used to. The Ebay changes have helped to increase interest in the swap meets and shows. These have been hurt by Ebay over the past few years. Also private auctions have become a frequent source for the collector and seller.

        Ron,
This what I just did and it worked.......................................

You can start from any Ebay page that you can type in a search. I started on My Ebay page.
Click the advance search tab at top.
        Click on Parts ans Accessories
        Click on Vintage Car Parts
        Enter Make and model
Enter the years you want to search (as in this example (63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967). As I mentioned before with the New Ebay Motors I believe you have to enter each year (2 and 4 digit) in parentheses. Unless someone has found a better way.
        Click search.

After the results pop up go down the left side to "Seller".
Click seller then when window opens click the "Include" tab and it will give you an option to "exclude".
Enter seller name you want to exclude.
Click search and it should give what you want.

        Thanks again Terry!!

Wow, a secret for sure ebay does not want the masses to know about, it took 1966 Corvette from 4600 to 1300, back the way it used to be.

          thanks so much!

It is kinda tricky to do as you can't edit this very well...

and that dreaded summit with a half million listings??? different user ID...

Ron, once it pops up with the listings be sure to "Save this Search" under the search bar. Then you can go directly to it from your My Ebay page.

              Henry,

When you start fesh this works good. What I could not get the site to do was add another -vendor to the list. So I just recreated it and added both SR sales and the newer SR id to filter both, then deleted the other saved search.

One of the big changes is the increase in fees to auction stuff. Ebay has cranked up the charges and since you have to use PayPal they double dip you. I was selling some stuff on ebay, but you have to put the price up to cover their fees.
                Bob's comments were right on.
I sold about $250K worth of original used, restored, and NOS vintage car parts on eBay from about 2001 until former CEO Meg Whitman retired. (Meg Whitman now is the republican candidate for Govenor of California).

When eBay's board of director named John Donahoe as CEO, the site has done nothing but slide downhill. Along with stock prices.
First sellers were nailed to the cross with fee increases. Then, as Bob mentioned...... Donahoe forced all sellers to either use PayPal (wholly owned by eBay, of course), or a private credit card broker (another fee generator for eBay).
It seems that making a couple billions dollars in net profit a year,......just wasn't quite enough....

As soon as the PayPal mandate was put into place, I closed my eBay account that proudly displayed over 2,000 positive feedback ratings. Many current NCRS members were buyers from my former account.

I realize that some NCRS members like doing business via PayPal. I respect those views. Fraud probllems associated with PayPal are admittedly, relatively rare.
The high costs are the issues. Imagine you put your own money in a bank account. The bank pays you no interest, but charges you 5% on the dollar for handling your money. Then, you can withdraw only if it meets the banks set rules. How would that work for your own personal savings account? I left out one thing. This ficticious "bank" I mentioned, has been set up differently than a conventional bank, so it isn't regulated by federal banking laws put into place to protect depositors.

Common net gain on average parts sold on interent auction sites is somewhere between 10%, and 20% net gain (or profit) to the seller.
When eBay and using PayPal fees hit the 10% level, there's no margin for error.
That's the reason most quality used or NOS Corvette parts listed on the site now (from the fewer sellers) are either listed with very high minimum opening bid amounts, or hidden reserves.
Sales per listings are way down. One can commonly see the same part listed over, and over, and over again. I personally know of one rare part that I have seen concsecutively relisted for six months now.

John Donahoe essentially ruined the site for vintage parts sellers. There are some left, but my best guess is those folks for whatever reason, are now operating on a razor thin margin.

How Donahoe was able to survive the wrath of the board, was he actually increased eBay profits by stinging tens of millions of new "garage sale" type sellers with his fee increases. The board was willing to sacrifice vintage car parts sellers, ...by raising the bottom line at the expense of new, unknowing listers. It's all about profits. I know....I know....that's the American way.

Sad, the site has been so damaged....
