    1967 electrical fuses

I am working on my 67 today and have a question about the correct size fuses. Some of these fuses say AGC and some with SFG and I would like to know what is correct so I can make sure everything is to spec. I take it the amps rating that's on the fuse box is correct but what about AGC etc.

I believe the first fuse for the guages is the original correct 10 amp it reads something like 311 10 A.

    Any help is appreciated.

Open your copy of the owner's manual and you'll see the factory fuse spec's quoted. Yep, the amperage rating defines the fuse blow threshold.

What are the other alphabet soup designators? They define the physical packaging (geometry, construction) of the fuse along with its specific blow profile (e.g. how LONG will it run at the rated amperage level before it lets go?).

Thanks Jack, are you saying in the owners manual the AGC, SFE spec is called out. That's what I am after because some of these have been changed..

        Tim -

Yes, the fuse chart in the owner's manual calls out the AGC spec for all fuses except one, and it's a typo - calls for an "SAE 20", which should be "SFE 20". AGC fuses are all the same length, and SFE fuse lengths vary with their amperage rating.

Timothy, here's link to a fuse definition and length chart previously posted. Scroll down to my post and click on the attachment Fuse - Size Dimensions.pdf Gary....

Re: 1967 color coded glass electrical fuses

Tim - In addition there's a nice article in the Restorer by a bunch of guys (who apparently had nothing else to do ) on the use of color-coded glass fuses in 67 and newer Corvettes. These fuse manufactures were either Buss fuses (Bussman Mfg. Division) or Littelfuse fuses (Littelfuse, Inc.) and Made in the U.S.A. Pete

Re: 1967 color coded glass electrical fuses

I'm not sure that we recognize that (two vendors, Buss/Littlefuse)... I say that because I've pulled a number of originals from scrapyard cars from the era and one painted the glass vial on the inside; the other on the outside. If memory serves, the '67 JG mandates that all fuses were color coded AND that the color band is on the inside of the glass...

My former employer who installed the color coded fuses bought from both suppliers. Corvette usage was luck of the draw.

Jack - As always, interesting comments. Those 67 guys, I guess I'll have to talk with them. As with the 660 thermostat housings, it was the manufactures' option as to where they put the part number or in this case how they designated the color coding of the amperage on the glass fuses and it's referenced in the Restorer article. In fact the Buss fuses that usually had the color "painted" on the inside of the glass tube did paint their smaller length fuses with a "dot" or marking on the outside so you could tell visually if the fuse had "blown." Littelfuse (not Littlefuse) fuses did have the "dot" or marking on the outside of the glass as mentioned in the Restorer article. Pete

                      Pete,

Thanks for the information.. Can you tell me what issue restorer the article is written. I purchased these color coded fuses for my 63 years ago from LI only to discover they were not used in 63.

Bill - Not quite, but it was when you and all of us were much younger. The Corvette Restorer article "More on Corvette Color-Coded Glass Fuses" was in Vol. 29, No. 3, Winter 2003, pp. 18-20 and as noted there were other Restorer articles that mentioned the color-coded fuses, Vol. 20, No. 1, p.6 and Vol. 23, No. 3, pp. 28-29. Tim - I checked the LI Catalog I have, #22, and they are listed as FUSE SET (OEM WITH CORRECT COLOR STRIPES)(8 PC) for 63-67. While I find LI is usually correct on their applications, the first application of the color-coded fuses to Corvettes and other other GM vehicles was with the 1967 production year. Also, worth noting for my experience is that while the color stripes are were "correct" on the sets I have seen the stripe is on the outside of the glass tube while the original Buss color-coded glass tube fuses had the stripe on the inside of the glass tube.
