I wonder how many points were deducted for the valve covers being on the wrong sides of the engine?

I wonder if the selling price of 105k is legit.

Considering Ed Foss brought a 16k original mile '72 ZR1 Coupe - in Green - to a Mecum auction a few months back that resulted in a no sale at $200k, I think $105k is a steal.

A convertible, which is rarer for ZR1's, and the white ver blue color combo, which are USA racing colors, to me make this car a lot more desirable. Aside from the fact Ed's car was a low mile original which has it's own merits.

        I'd say, "Well bought."

I will start with the I am no expert disclaimer.

Auction house "no sale" figures are extremely unreliable in establishing value. The auction houses frequently bid the number up to a point south of the reserve. The money may or may not be in the room. My understanding is that this is considered legal and ethical.

Re the car discussed here. I saw the car at Bloomington several years ago and it was spectacular. Excellent color combination that really stands out.

It may be legit. The car may be legit, and sounds like it is based on the comments of others.

But that award (particularly a Chapter award) does not prove that

"all the casting numbers and date codes are correct on this car (100%)."

Moreover, as a buyer, I would have found it troubling that the seller repeatedly refused to post the most important numbers, i.e, VIN and stamp pad.

I'll bet this is part of the reason the car was so "well bought."

                Re: "LT-1 ZR1" on Ebay

As the owner of a documented '70 ZR1, I agree with the seller's stance on posting pics of certain identifying dates, stamps, marks, etc. It's taken me a few years and a lot of networking to obtain stamp pad images of other known ZR1's - and for good reason.

Much of what makes C3 ZR1 numbers verifiable is that many if not most of them share the same numbers based on "batch" manufactured HD parts. There are also physical anomalies in certain markings that - with effort - could be replicated - not perfectly, but in very close approximation - if a counterfeiter had verified pics/samples to work from.

As the seller states, if anyone is serious about making a purchase of this magnitude, they'll spring for an expert to take a look or get on an airplane and see the car for themselves.

This car is my absolute favorite of all the ZR1's I've seen in pics or person. Awesome car. Congrats to the new owner.

IMO, I expected that car to hit $150-$175k minimum considering it's provenance, color combo and 'vert configuration. If the buyer wasn't Pro-Team, it had to be one of the few collectors specializing in SHP shark cars. I suspect one of our fellow members has a new toy. I'd love to see this car in person!

Why the seller didn't take it to Mecum or a high-end auction house is beyond me. I'd have consigned it on the condition it'd go after one or two real-deal L88's crossed the block. If a bidder petered-out on an L88, the ZR1 would have made an incredible "consolation prize" for undoubtably more money than the seller got on ebay. The ZR1's an infinitely more drivable car if a guy ever wanted to enjoy it on the road.

                      Dan,

I talked with the owner just a couple of hours before the auction ended with the intention to buy the car. I had seen the car and talked with the owner 21 years earlier. After speaking with him about the car's particulars I decided to pass on it. I prefer much more original condition cars in the configuration that GM built it in.

If my memory is correct, 70' vin. #14 and vin. #18 owners were asking 250k a couple of years ago, I think one may have sold ?? In comparison to this corvette being one of 25, 110k was a steal unless there is something funny about the car. Steve
