Re: To the thief stealing gas caps during Corvettes at Carlisle- THIS MESSAGE IS FOR
Lance, I had a message but deleted it. Maybe I shouldn't have so I will try it again.
Yours is not the only show the thiefs are working. With the vast size of your show it would be costly and difficult to have security cameras.
But plain clothes security might be successful in catching the thiefs. My guess is they are a couple of innocent looking well groomed spectators. Maybe a guy and a girl team. I have thought this for several years now.
Car owners might be better off putting on repro caps and keeping the rare originals caps locked up.
Meanwhile your show this year was one of the better. I told a fellow vendor something he liked to hear. I said there are no bad Corvette Carlisle shows for old JD. Just some of them are better than others. This was one of the better ones. Keep up the good work.
The NCRS display and building setup was first class. Thanks, JD- Top

Stealing an original gas cap is a horrible thing but there are worse. I was at The Food Lion Auto Fair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and for the 2d show in a row someone was leaning into some cars and spray painting the interior. These are the times we live in.Bill Strobel

I was there too Bill...could not believe some idiot was doing this for the second year in a row.
I did not have my car there and may never bring it until this foolishness stops. But of course that is what this jackass is trying to do...kill attendance. On a positive note the Dealers Auction was very impressive. There were very nice cars that went through...many no sales but I did see some good buys.- Top

Lance, I was very sad to hear about the thefts at your show. I was reading about this on another forum and some guy there actually placed some blame on the owners for having their cars displayed with rare parts on them which is just nuts. Unfortunetly the world has changed and not for the better I'm afraid. BTW I hope you do catch him/them and put them behind bars.- Top

...it was probably the two guys driving around the FunField on Sat in a 2000ish F-O-R-D Mustang coupe with the loud exhaust & blacked out wheels.
...do they drive around Chevy's at the Ford or Mopar Nats @ Carlisle???

do not allow any over night camping at the fair grounds because i am sure this does not happen during the day when the people are there. the only people on the fair grounds after dark should be the security people- Top

why would anyone allow a stranger to fool with their gas cap. don't people watch their cars or ask their buddy to watch if they have to leave the show field. hell i don't have a valuable corvette but i never leave it out of my sight at car cruises because people let their kids crawl all over them if you are not there.- Top

Re: To the thief stealing gas caps during Corvettes at Carlisle- THIS MESSAGE IS FOR
I really enjoyed Carlisle this year. In 2007, I took a spare gas cap for my '57 for when I left it unattended in the Fun Fest area and locked the early model Eaton in the trunk. There are other items that worry me that are pricey and easily removed. I won't mention them in particular, but you know what items they are.
I hope the thieves are caught. Having to strip down your own car to avoid thievery flies in the face of the good camaraderie that we go to enjoy. Perhaps a few monitored bait cars might help.Dave, 1969 427, 1957

At the recent National Convention in Charlotte, I was advised to remove the original antenna mast from my car while it was on the judging area overnight. I suppose after the mast and gas cap, the hubcaps will disappear next.....
I was also at the Food Lion Fair. After hearing about the paint in the cars (which were very near mine) I had to lock the car if I left it. Never really gave a thought to the parts, but now I will.
Good thing my sons and I didn't catch the painter..... we'd probably be in jail today......- Top

At a Bloomington Gold event, when it was back at the McLean County Fairgrounds -- so that was a very long time ago, someone cleaned the rust and dirt from the stamp in my master cylinder. I would have told them what the stamp was, had they asked -- but at least there was no permanent damage in that case.
I don't know if this trend is escalating or the thieves are getting bolder, but it has changed only in degree. The abuse of cars on display has gone on for some time. Thanks to Lance for having the courage to bring it to light.
I like the idea of "bait cars." A television show features would-be car thieves on video trying to steal a baited car. The police can stop the engine and lock the doors from a remote. Gotchya!Terry- Top

Re: To the thief stealing gas caps during Corvettes at Carlisle- THIS MESSAGE IS FOR
Lance,
Posting here and on the Corvette Forum was a smart idea. It should limit the thief's ability to sell on ebay. I had a numismatic friend who left a coin show in Charlotte NC and went in to a fast food restaurant on the way home and all his coins were stolen out of his car in broad day light.
The cops surmised that he was followed from the show. About two weeks later the thieves listed a lot of his coins on ebay in Miami FL and were arrested by the FBI. Granted the FBI won't look for the gas cap thieves but they just might be dumb enough to sell on ebay.- Top
