far as i know they only get the good ones. this has been going on for years. they know what they are looking for. now some of the rare c2 and c3 caps are starting to get pretty expensive so they are probably a target too but harder to steal durring a show.

Two choices in life my father told me.

1 stealing.....take what you want and pay more than the price in the end.
2 Get a JOB and earn what you have. I love my job and the pride of earning my keep.

A way to catch the jackass

1 Even if you NEED a gas cap for judging just do not buy one off of ebay! Take the point deduct. If the jackass has no market to sell the caps it will stop.

2 If someone has a cap that is for sale lets make a list on here and other forums of the seller and ask where it came from. A running list of vendors and fuel caps are a start.

3 MARK ALL of your parts. Inside the caps, wingnut, or whatever. Take and make a mark you know and take a picture of it. That way when it is found, sold or looked at you will have proof it is yours! You can do this without judges or a thief knowing.

This was my first Carlisle and what a great event and people. The best time of my life with the corvette group.
Im so sorry for the people that got ripped off by a jackass.

Lance: I was one of the unfortunate victims of the gas cap thief at the event last weekend in the 60 display tent. I very much appreciate your message and your efforts to find this person or persons responsible. I would just like to add that your security personal were very distressed when I reported the loss and were very kind. I would also like to note that Joe C did a great job and other than this incident I was very pleased with the display. I have been coming to Corvetts at Carlisle for twenty plus years and it has always gotten better. I have been bringing my 60 for the last five years and will continue to bring it and we will catch this thief and he will be punished hopefully by a few Corvette owners. Thanks for the posting

Re: To the thief stealing gas caps during Corvettes at Carlisle- THIS MESSAGE IS FOR

I've never had the opportunity to visit Corvettes at Carlisle and find the thefts distressing and bothersome in that it creates heightened concern with participants. Not being familiar with early gas caps (C-1, C-2) or anything past 1972 the early C-3 caps have a "shell" on the underside that has a spring inside. I wonder if it's possible to plant GPS chips in some caps to locate the thieves after they take off with their ill-gotten booty?

              Thanks,

C-2's are similar if not the same. I use a GM replacement cap which has the pressure/relief valve arrangement inside that dome. My original is just open inside and has a vent hole in it, but I would not want to sacrifice it in such a manner. Also, I prefer the later cap to help with the fume control in my garage. My original is stored and has been for some time as I used a locking cap for many years before the change to the replacement cap.

just because its on ebay does not mean its stolen. i buy and sell stuff there all the time. i have some rare gas caps. i buy some on ebay or swam meets where i see them if the price is right. no way to tell if its stolen or not. they all look the same. i have lots of rare parts in my collection.
