      Re: 67 Big Block Hood

      Well all I know is that the rag Corvette Fever had a 5 page article about it 5 years ago and it seemed credible. I have a NCRS judging this weekend (my first) so maybe it will be a topic of conversation. The hood supoort is a good question but with an AC option, the small block car has the hood support on the big bloxk side. It may be an Urban Legend but I won it so I like it!

        Re: 67 Big Block Hood

        I'll quote from Noland's book. Maybe someone who knows him can ask him for the source of the information.

        ...dealers soon began receiving requests for the big-block hoods to be factory-installed on new 327-engine Corvettes. These requests went to the zone offices, and eventually to the St. Louis plant. There, the requests were denied: There would be no 327-engine Corvettes with big-block hoods.

        Enter disaster. The company supplying ... (the mold broke)

        A quick check of inventory revealed that there were enough big-block hoods to continue production, so the decision was made to install big-block hoods on all Corvettes until...

        Thus, big-block hoods were installed on small-block cars in late February or early March 1967 for a period of three to five days. (He footnotes car 12345 as proof.)

          I like your reply. I guess I kicked the hornet's nest with this one.

            No. `67 SB cars with AC or not, had the support on the passenger side. BB cars AC or not had the support on the driver side. AC had nothing to do with it in `67.

              Correct he only cites 12345 as an example. If he had anything but legend, wouldnt you think he would have cited that as well?

              Noland goes on to say the " hoods have several identifying factors. He only list two. One: "no sign of the lower hood support mount on the right inner fender" but, #12345 his only example has holes on the RH side where the support was. It even has tale tale scratches where the support bracket was, and has a non riveted mount bolted onto the LH side. This directly contradicts the stated identifying factor. Two: Then Noland goes off on some tangent about the difference between factory hoods and replacement hoods. These WERE factory hoods. Replacement hoods hadn't been invented yet. In fact, all GM `67 BB hoods of the era only had provisions on the LH side.

              So what do we have left? No example and a legend.

                There is a fifth dimension, beyound that which is known to man;

                It is a dimension as vast as space, and timeless as infinity;

                  My 67 SB has the hood support on the driver's side and it is an AC car. There aren't any holes on the passenger side where the support might have been at one time. I am having the car judges on Sunday at the Delware Valley meet so I will see what they say and ring you back.

                    Will a SB hood even clear a BB, specially the 435hp air cleaner??

                    p.s. it took me 20 years to figure out why my 63 came with a white shift ball (5 finger dealer swap).

                          That is true serial number wise, but, one is a AOS body and the other is a St. Louis body. They were not likely built on the same day, maybe not even in the same week. Certainly not the same plant. So the bodies are not technically sisters.

                            I suppose that next I'll be told that Corvette never made a 425hp-409 in 1963.

                            Oh, I'm so heartbroken.....whats next?
