My 68 BEB built convertible has springs on the doors and my center compartment door is plastic and has a bow effect. Have thought about removing it and placing a cinder block on top of it in the driveway and see what happens on a hot summer day to flatten it.

Jim, that's funny. Mine is bowed as well.

I have that same plastic door and the bow. Late Dec build.

                      Jim:

It is interesting about your car's center compartment door. My car's center compartment door is fiberboard, just like the outboard ones. I think my car (#11552) was built on the same day (or near enough) as yours. For this reason, I have long used your posts as a model of how my car should be configured!

Would someone who has the spring loaded door(s) take a few pictures of the spring and its' position on open and closed? Has anyone duplicated the spring? This will be a winter project. I'm sure mine had it originally but not now.

                        Thanks,

Chevrolet had a Technical Service Bulletin on "hard to open moulded plastic center compartment stowage door". It states "the moulded plastic door was replaced with a rigid masonite door on vehicles produced after 1/15/68." The bulletin is # 68-T-57 dated July 12, 1968. The bulletin instructed dealers to use masonite door part # 3941908 and retainer # 3937912 to correct customer complaint vehicles.

There is a date of 5/6/68 on the underside of the back deck. Right above where back window is stowed. Forgive me if this is not a good date.

I think that you will find all this info about the doors (and more) in the 1968-69 TI&JG available from the NCRS office.
