    Recommendations on Weatherstip glue

I am prepping my 67 coupe for Kissimmee and would like to put some weatherstrip glue on the hood and door weatherstipping. The weatherstripping is already installed and secure, I just want to put some glue to replicate the sloppiness that the factory did it. Whoever put on my weatherstipping didn't get a drop of glue anywhere.
ANyone recommend a good, safe for paint, glue that dries dark yellow/brownish color that I can touch up my hood and doors with? There is a gentleman who advertises in the driveline some glue, but it's loaded with paint thinner and he said it will "soften" the paint on the underside of my hood and doors before it dries...That scares me.....
    Thanks in advance

We used Weldwood Contact Cement when 3M discontinued their brush on weatherstrip adheasive. Use an acid brush to apply, close the door, hood, etc. when you have attached the weather strip. Wait a couple of hours or so and you are done. Follow the instructions on the can.

Google up "Pliobond". It's pretty much dead on to that originally used. It's thin and waterry for brush application and is still used in the aircraft industry for weatherstrip attachment...

          Ara,
Who did your weatherstriping? He would be a good guy to know.
Thank God he didn't work for GM back then or he would have been fired for doing it right. Can you imagine how hard it would be today to explain that there were actually cars that were done the way they were supposed to be back then?
What would have happened if the weatherstripping didn't rot and have to be replaced and we had to explain that ours was one that was done right? My guess is that they would all look good after resteration.

            Ara,
Try 3M weatherstrip adhesive. It's packaged in a tube.
It comes in black or yellow and it does not seem to soften paint.
But do a test spot before you use it.
These 2 adhesives brush nicely when you have a fresh tube but string badly when the tube gets old.

thanks to all for your suggestions. I ordered one of each of the recommended products. I will test each on a scrap piece of metal and let you all know what success (if any) I have. Thanks again..ARA

Ara, if you need the part number for the 3M Super Trim Adhesive in yellow it's # 08001.

                  Re: Recommendations on Weatherstip glue

Although you see a lot of guys using the 3M yellow adhesive it's not correct. It does not duplicate the original glue.
If Michael Hanson is looking in I am sure he will agree with this.

Jack Humphrey etal, Do you think that "Pliobond would be any good for an FI job I do. I need to glue a rubber diaphragm to a round magnesium disc.
I always used Fel-Pro for many years. Fel-Pro Cobond is history and so are the case of tubes I bought trying to stock up. I have tried the yellow 3M stuff but it's too thick and makes a mess. Thanks, JD

                    Agree.

It's a bright yellow color that looks nothing like the original.
I would skip it and think about some of the other suggestions offered. The Pliobond looks interesting.

Thanks guys. I ordered some Pilobond from Sears. About 10 bucks. When I get it, I will test it and let you know how it looks. If the yellow weatherstip 3M product is like the black product, it is pretty tacky and thick. I am anxious to see how it comes. Thanks again for all the suggestions. ARA

Patrick et al, I think that Pliobond and Weldwood are basically the same composition, solvent based contact adhesive. Just just coat both surfaces and wait until they tack up and them press the two together, hopefull in the right place.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. But, you're not saying much about the job itself. If the magnesium the rubber is to be bonded to is part of an engine heat producing component, that might change the equation!

Pliobond is intended for rubber adhesion to metal surfaces that see AMBIENT temps. AND, in the aircraft industry, those surface can/do get pretty darn cold! But, they don't get super warm/hot...

Some aircraft surfaces can get pretty darned hot -- depends on the type of aircraft, where the surface is on the aircraft, and how fast and high it goes. I assUme you guys have looked at the specifications for Pliobond. They should tell you a temperature range. If not ask the manufacturer or supplier.
