Part Numbers and Odd/Even Casting/Assembly reference

A thread I just read about casting numbers and assembly numbers of C1 Park Lights just made me think of something.....

Assumption: The typical numbering system has part numbers that end with a even number are for the "right" side(PS), and those that end with a odd number are for the left side(DS).

Is this common for both the casting numbers, as well as assembly numbers when a casting number appears on a part?
If a casting # on a part is odd, will the assembly# always be odd, and even# casting always be even assembly #?

Richard. I think it is not the case. Casting numbers don't designate left or right as far as I know. How do you think of this stuff so early ??

      Rich -

Although it wasn't an Engineering Drafting or Releasing requirement, generally speaking, if a LH/RH-specific part was designed, the left side part got an odd number and the RH part got the next even number. There are exceptions where the same part is used on both sides, where a part designed to be used on the LH side also ends up being used later on the RH side of a different car line, etc.

John, So it sounds like it was more general rule than a specific process, ok. Thanks, good to know that when I rummage through swap meets and garage sales.

Tom......I think it's because it's usually "Before Coffee"!
See, it's "After Coffee" now and notice I haven't asked any unusual questions............yet.
