What are the side effects of not using a windage tray? I don't plan on putting the car around a circle track of running the cones. I wouldn't mind installing it, just cant find the correct 5 bolts. Thanks

Re: '64 365hp Windage Tray Yes or No?
The main studs for use with the windage tray are GM #3872718. Any GM dealer should be able to order them for you.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '64 365hp Windage Tray GM Bolts
Thanks to all for the great feedback. One more request: anyone know the exact lenght of the GM bolts (part #3872718)? Reason is I've purchased a set of bolts (only 4) from a speedshop but they are too long and hit the baffle in the oil pan, however, by reducing the excess threaded end (toward the baffle) I may be able to use them afterall. I've found it impossible to obtain orginal GM bolts from any of the usual corvette parts providers. As always, thanks in advance for your assistance. Fred- Top

Gentlemen
I've used this wind age tray in every motor I've built for years. I'm working on a 59 283/270 and tryed twice in the last month to order the studs and tray.My dealer told me the studs have been discontinued ,but the tray is still available. The latest GM Performance Parts Catalog shows the tray , but no studs.

I would not use anything other than these correct units, but that's my humble opinion.- Top

Re: '64 365hp Windage Tray GM Bolts
As Joe has already mentioned, you can get GM studs #3872718 from any GM dealer (not Corvette Parts Vendor). You can order from your friendly local GM dealer (Chev/Pontiac/GMC/Etc) or simply order them online from www.gmpartsdirect.com or equivalent. I just checked www.gmpartsdirect.com and they are indeed available in packs of 2 from them.
I would not use anything other than these correct units, but that's my humble opinion.
For small journal cranks? When I checked, every supplier of small journal windage tray bolts was out and on backorder.Including GM parts direct. If thats the correct part number? They have them now.
I ended up using ARP studs.- Top

As you probably already know, Joe Lucia is our resident expert on GM part numbers. If that's what Joe says, I'd say it's accurate.- Top

Re: '64 365hp Windage Tray GM Bolts
Well, there's always the possibility that a part that still shows available has been very recently discontinued. It seems like sometimes the system might be a month or two behind. For certain parts, especially an old part number like this one, at some point GMSPO makes a decision not to order any more in or the manufacturer goes out of business or stops making the part. However, it's not officially discontinued until the last one is out of the last GM warehouse that stocks it. So, the system may still show a part as available but it's actually not.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I think they got it backwards. The studs are still available (with the caveat that I described in another response that it is possible that they have been very recently discontinued). The windage tray was discontinued in October, 1995. It was GM #3769768. It's not shown in any current GM catalog that I know of. However, it is available in reproduction and, maybe, as a GM-licensed restoration part. Many GM dealers can order GM-licensed restoration parts but I do not think they are ordered through GMSPO. A few might be, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '64 365hp Windage Tray Yes or No?
Looking at this discusion on the windage tray brings up a question that I have had for awhile. If a short block with 4 bolt mains is used to replace a 2 bolt main engine, can the tray still be used?- Top

Sure, the 69 Z-28 and the LT-1s had windage trays.- Top

Re: '64 365hp Windage Tray Yes or No?
Michael------
Yes, but they were different windage trays and different studs were used with them.
The 1969 Z-28 used a "C" cross section windage tray of GM #3927136. This tray was used with studs GM #3960312 (now GM #14087508). The 1969 Z-28 oil pan was different than any 63-74 Corvette oil pan (but basically the same as 75-79 L-82) and I don't think the 3927136 will fit of function properly with any 63-74 Corvette oil pan. Certainly, it was never originally used with those oil pans, either the "5 quart" or "6 quart".
1970-72 LT-1, except ZR-1, used a different windage tray that was similar to the 3927136, but shorter. This tray, GM #3989075, is fairly rare as it was discontinued many years ago. It was also used for 1973-74 L-82. It used the GM #3960312 studs. 1970-72 ZR-1 and, most likely, early 1970 LT-1 with 6 quart pan used the same flat baffle as the 1963-65 SHP. However, it used the GM #3960312 studs.
1975-79 L-82 used the 3927136 windage tray in conjunction with the 3960312 studs. The oil pan used was the GM #360450. This entire set-up was basically the same as 1969 Z-28.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
