    The retainer clip keeps the spring from popping all the rest of the pieces off the end of the bolt. You might want to get the kit so you have all the right pieces.
    Whats the down side if you only have the bolt,washer,filter and none of the internal parts? Oil won't filter properly?

        You'll likely have a leak down the shaft and out the bottom of the cannister.

            I went to the LIC catalog and they show a steel tube as part of the kit. What is it for?

                I think the tube is for installing the retainer which holds everything in (as previously mentioned). Don H.
