Re: Advice re '66 C2 roadster project
James,
IMO given that you do not intend to flight judge the car and drive it the 327 is the way to go. The 327 will be less $$$'s to build, maintain, keep cool and much more forgiving under all driving conditions. But it is your ride so you should build it for yourself. Carl
My 2 cents: a '66 Convertible is not rare, so it should not be treated like it is, with great pains to restore the originality on this sort of car. A resto-mod Sting Ray has a huge following outside NCRS and if fully sorted, it can INCREASE in value. If at any time you feel that it is too much trouble to verify this car as an original BB car, do the restomod in whichever way you like, and enjoy it.

Re: Advice re '66 C2 roadster project
John:
We know that big blocks had stronger U-joint attachments at the rear end flange and shot peened half shafts. While the assertion in the 1970 catalog about heavy duty spindle support arms does not make obvious sense, the possibility of a stronger spindle does. We have all seen twisted spindles. I have included pictures of what has been described to me by a knowledgeable NCRS member as the marking for a big block spindle. The picture on the left is of a 1970 LT-1 spindle. The indented pip mark on the left pad inside the spindle flange is what is supposed to designate heavy duty. The next picture if of a documented 1967 big block. A similar pip mark is on the left side but on the flange near the wheel center rather than on the inner pads. The next picture is of a bare small block spindle. It has none of the indented pip marks, but it may have part of an "X" on the flange that would be near the wheel center hole.
James: Does your 66 have any similar markings on the rear spindles? By the way does it it still have a 1966 dated rear in it and if so what is the code?- Top

Ronald: Could you post a picture. It would also be good to see pictures of 1966 small block car spindles and those of the fellow who started this thread to discuss ways to detecting a 66 big block.- Top

Re: Advice re '66 C2 roadster project
Ron, Here's some more information that might further this discussion.
Your BB spindle picture caused me to double check my 66 BB spindles. Mine look the same as yours, (indented circle with small raised dot in center) but on my drivers side spindle there is a slightly raised "XS 2915" cast marking running in a counter-clockwise direction around the outer circumference of the spindle flange. This is visible with the wheel installed. The passenger side has no such visible marking, but is identical otherwise. I assume the 2915 is a date code, ie. 291st. day of 1965. Anybody know what the XS might indicate?- Top
