Ron,

The dull aluminum paint process targeted the bare cast iron surface of the cylinder head between the intake manifold and the valve cover. That surface wouldn't have been coated with orange during the engine paint process.
The other area painted with dull aluminum would be the thermostat housing and the area around it.
The dull aluminum paint process was far from precise and some of the valve cover and intake manifold along the junction would have received some overspray. Sometimes quite a bit of overspray.

Michael, would the temperature sending unit wire retainers under right valve cover bolts be 'natural' or get some silver? Was sending unit installed after paint or masked off?

Dan,

The original temp wire retainers were black (grey, actually) when new. However, after installation on the engine, the dull aluminum paint operation that covered the area between the intake manifold and valve cover on the cyl head would have also covered at least the top side of the wire retainer.
