    Long time before restart

I have had my '62 chassis and drive train finished for some time now and had periodically started the engine. (just to hear it run!)

I thought I was going to have the body back to dry fit it to the frame fairly soon so I removed my dashbox and radiator etc. Now it appears that it may be mid winter before that comes about.

So, my carb is full of gas and I am concerned that I should do something to prevent it from gumming up and turning to varnish before I can run it again.

If I remove the carb and drain the gas out as best as I can, will that be sufficiant to prevent any issues in the future? Or is there some additive that I should run thru it in the gas by reconnecting the radiator and dashbox to start it up again?

Do you have antifreeze in your block? If not, you may want to just reinstall the radiator and run it out of gas. You can circulate antifreeze at the same time.

You don't really need the dashbox. A couple of hot wires will light it off and run. That's what I did last weekend.

Anti Freeze is in the block.

How do I hot wire it to just run it out of gas?

I was going to put sta-bil in the gas. Is that a good idea?

Where is the car/engine being kept? If in a heated garage you need to do nothing, it will not gum up in a couple of months, assuming you are using good gas. Just running the engine out of gas will not get all the gas out of the secondaries unless you run it wide open. If concerned I would pull the carb, and drain the engine block. If you want to be absolutely sure everything will stay ok in case it takes longer to restart then predicted, hook things up again then run anti freeze thru it, fuel stabilizer in gas and fog the engine till it stalls, this will protect the valves and cylinder walls. Just be aware that when you do start back up it will blow alot of smoke for a few minutes.
Just my 2 cents from 30 years of winterizing boat and car engines.

          Terry has good advise...

To start the engine, you need 2 wires:

One from the + post on the battery to the + terminal on the coil. (use a ballast resistor in this wire if you are running very long)

Another to supply a momentary connection between the S terminal of the starter solenoid and the + post of the battery (or to the center lug of the solenoid). I used a push buttom switch in this connection to engage the starter but you could just briefly short across the solenoid with a screw driver blade or jumperwire (I wouldn't do this unless you like sparks)

If you're going to let it sit for only six months or so, I'd hurry up and do nothing. My toys sit that long every winter, no problems. The sky is not falling.
