    Engine Start Video...Finally !!

    All,

Thanks to some great help from members on this discussion board and my local chapter (Midway USA), I'm able to post this video link of the initial start-up of my 63 L76 engine.

It happened Sept 03 and was kinda like a very small circus. We found a fuel leak before starting, a weak battery, ran out of gas and eventually blew the lower radiator hose off about 20 minutes in to the event. (the later two aren't on the video). The hose blow provided an opportunity to understand why you shouldn't add antifreeze until you know all is well. That would have resulted in a sticky mess with anything other than water in there.

In the end, it all worked out fantastic!! I've since fully tuned the old girl and she runs and idles like a purring tiger. I can't wait to row through the gears !!

Hopefully there are some nuggets on the video that will help others as they approach this phase on their own projects.

    Enjoy !!

Sounds great, nothin like a frisky small block.

        Tracy,

Strong work! I really enjoyed your video. One minor point, Bob Kunz does run his carbs on a mule engine when he gets done. Did you have to do anything to the carb after it sat for 20 years?

I told Bob when he did this carb that it would be "a few years" before I could install it. Because of that, he did not test run it. He said that exposing the gaskets and seals to fuel and then leaving dry for an extended period might cause a problem.

I've done nothing more than tweak the idle mixture using the peak vacuumn method described in the service manual.

                Good job,

I couldn't see it and the vidio made it look like it was standing still (good also, a lot wiggle ) yours ran so tru it looked as if it were standing still.

I am getting to the point of body on frame or start engine in frame also with my 67 / 427 bur my heart is with the small block.

I put a 365 small block in my car when I got it because the BB was trashed and I had a fresh 365 in the shop.

I raced a BB 427 and beat it. My vette came with a 4:11 and that helped.

Ahh the smell of paint burning off the exhaust.

                    Tracy;

I'm not one who wants to throw cold water on anything, and maybe it's my old eyesight and old fashion 15" computer screen, but are those really 2-1/2" exhaust pipes? Somehow they look like 2", but again it's probably me. On my 63 L-76, the pipes running from the cross member back are kinda squashed oval. Only other question I have is where did you get a white throttle return spring that will work right?

                    Have fun.

                      Tracy,

One more "service" that Bob provides that I was not aware of.

It sounds great, keep up the good work.

Hmmmm...ya really think I would miss somethng like the size of my pipes Stu? Better update that ole transistorized monitor of yours The exhaust system came from Gardner and I couldn't be happier with it.

I don't recall where I sourced the return spring for the carb linkage (at least 10 years ago), but it does work good.

No offense Tracy, it probably is my old eyes. Perhaps it is the impression one gets when you see them on the bare (w/o body) chassis. My usual point of reference is from laying under my car with the pipe about 6 inches from my nose. Then them things look big!

I'll be interested in seeing more postings of your progress.

                            Tracy,

Everything looks great and the engine sounds very nice in the video.

Did you find many things to repair after this start up, it's a nice way to check the engine.

                              Stu,

A white throttle return spring is not the correct spring for 63. The white spring would actually be correct for a 62 with 340 HP.
The correct spring for 63 is black, and shorter than the white spring.
