    Michael;

    It took me a number of years to figure that out too. Think I bought one from every vendor until I gave up following the book. I even cut several down to use on mine until some one clued me in to get a later black one which I use to this day. Can't say I'm real pleased with it either as it is not strong enough for my liking and never holds a steady idle speed. For regular driving, I use a light booster spring. Funny how a number of vendors still list the white spring for 63's.

        If I rememmber correctly, the original error was in the GM parts book. It incorrectly listed the white spring for 62 with 340 HP as the one used on 63's with 340 HP.

        All 63 engines with carburetors used the black spring. I think it was a 38xx222, or 38xx224???

        I think I posted this info here a few years ago.

          The video is a good example of how long the exhaust manifold paint lasted - it was gone in 20 minutes, except for the "cold end" of the casting.

            It also showed, I believe, how much quicker the RH manifold got hotter than the LH manifold. My IFR gun shows it to be regularly about 100 degrees hotter, even when the engine is full warm where you'd expect the heat riser butterfly to be full open, and it sounds like it is at the tail pipe. That has always freaked me out and I go looking for something wrong on the right bank.

              Everything looks great and the engine sounds very nice in the video.

              Did you find many things to repair after this start up, it's a nice way to check the engine.
              Thanks Tim, nothing to repair.....all good!

                Thanks....sounds like I need to hunt a new throttle return spring.

                    Excellent idea, maybe with special emphasis on the shimming process?

                    Something like that certainly wouldn't benefit me any, at all... but it might be instructive for future reference
