Not exactly Ihor's situation, but I have a car (not Corvette) that has been under restoration for a loooong time and I have a substantial amount of money invested in the resurrection (It would be wrong to call what we are doing a restoration.). I inquired of my insurer (State Farm) and they will not insure the car until it is complete -- "drivable" was the term the agent used.

I know the quick and glib answer is to find another insurance company, but how many of you have tried to insure a car that is undergoing restoration? Does anyone actually have experience insuring a car while it is undergoing "restoration"?

      Hi Terry,

Did you question the insurance company about just comprehensive coverage just in case of fire or theft?

My '60 is under restoration, no registration or inspection and therefore not road worthy or "drivable" under state law. I trailered it to Carlilse to have AK install a top so I have it insured through Hagerty as a restoration in progress for an agreed value. I also have limited coverage on "parts" that I have for the restoration. I expect other collector car insurers offer the same type coverage as well.

Sorry for your loss Ihor, check with your carrier and see if there is any coverage.

Yes, Tim, that is precisely what I was looking for. Since it is not yet "drivable" I didn't need liability. While I didn't ask, I believe had I had insurance before the work began I could have maintained it through the length of the work, but since the car has been in "storage" for several decades there is no registration and no insurance in force.

I've had my 1969 in non-op registration status for several years. However, I still carry comprehensive insurance( i.e. fire, theft, vandalism, etc.) on my regular auto insurance policy. It's the same policy that the car has been insured on for 42 years. As a matter of fact, 42 years AS OF TODAY.

              Ihor,
I can't imagine what you must be going thru.

High expectation then a loss, that's terrible.

Yep, I'm the same as Robert with three cars under collector insurance with Consumer County Mutual. They too cover a car in restoration along with its parts. I pulled all my collector cars from my State Farm policy because they didn't understand agreed value, parts and restoration process. They also wanted to charge me a separate liability charge for each car, although I can only drive one at a time. With collector insurance, I have one liability for all three cars. BTW, all my other vehicles are with State Farm - a good company, just not for collections.

Haderty was very greatful that I advised them my car was at a restoration shop instead of my garage. When I advised that the car was for sale in Ohio, Haderty was appreciative and helpful.

Very sorry for your loss, Ihor. Thank you for sharing this information.

On the insurance note, .....Leand West Collector Car Insurance (who advertised in NCRS publications at one time) declined to issue insurance on my '67 Corvette while under restoration.
