Why does this wheel keep coming off ?

Purchased my '66 Nassau Coupe, Top Flight, 427/390, A/C, side pipes, from a well known, Orlando FL vette dealer last month. It has OEM KO wheels on Bias Ply. Since I was going to make a driver out of this Trailer Queen, he recommended to change these to safer repo's that bolt on but look like KOs. Instead of bolt on he produced used KO's that utilized safety pins, charged me $1,600. I also had DB radials installed.

    Readers Digest version of story:

Car was inspected by NCRS person, I paid deposit & flew to FL to complete the sale. On the 45 min. drive from dealer to destination the RF wheel's hub cap had fallen off, the pin was missing & the spinner was very loose. The wheel was w/in minutes or seconds of coming off. Dealer said the fault was due to a faulty pin. Based on research here & CF forum, I disagreed. He replaced pin & hub cap.

Car was transported to my home in Calif. Took short drives & CONSTANTLY checked wheels. On round trip of 130 ml. I checked wheel at half way point...all OK. Got home & parked.

On next planned trip, checked wheel, hub cap fell off w/ slight touch. It was dark outside so couldn't see well , but observed the pin was sticking out, taped it in w/ hammer, but it didn't move. Took the attached pics.

I would really appreciate your input on what is happening here.

    Peter

Check out this previous thread on the subject.

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...+pins&uid=4653

Don't rely on the safety pin to hold on the wheel. It is the clamping force of the spinner that is doing all the work. Original wheels did not use pins and they worked just fine. The pin is more to prevent someone from quickly stealing your wheel than anything else.

Re: Why does this wheel keep coming off ?

        Thanks John & Dick

I have read every post on this issue & my head is either spinning or shut down completely...I am totally lost & confused.

I wish someone would lay this out as if talking to the child that I am on this issue.

Why has this happened to only the RF wheel, even AFTER I've been hitting the spinner with a 5 lb lead hammer since it's been in Calif.

Looking at the photo, it looks like the pin is wedged in a gap between the rim & hub. It's moved from it's orifice to where it doesn't belong, & the gaps in the wheel/hub look uneven. Couldn't this come as a result if the wheels hole was oblong/not round? I'm of the opinion that perhaps this wheel is damaged & that's the source of the problem.

Just asking, and I don't know if would even matter, but do you have the adapter installed correctly with the correct "long" lug nuts ?

            Peter;

A couple of things. Forget about those "safety pins".. they will not keep a spinner from coming loose... original KOs did not have them!! Second, real KO wheels are side-dependent, meaning there are two specifically for the left side of the car and two specifically for the right side.

If those little spinner caps (your picture) come off, I would just go out a pick up a couple of spares.. they are for looks only, not function and do nothing to keep you wheel tight. They just pop in and pop out...

When your KOs are on correctly, the TOP OF THE SPINNER will rotate to the REAR of the car when tightening... If you are on the left (driver) side this means you will see a clockwise rotation when tightening. Conversely on the right side, you should see a CCW rotation when tightening. If this is not true then something is installed incorrectly. Perhaps the dealer got them mixed up, in whole or in part.. I would check this.

Once you are sure they are installed correctly.. forget the little lead hammer, put it away for judging and get one of the available tools (see the thread suggested which shows two different ones). You need to apply considerable force on those spinners to ensure yourself of safe operation...

I have had real KOs on my 1963 and now on my 1965. I throw the little pins away and use the special tool and a big hammer... no problems!

            Have fun!

            Joel

The dealer did all the installation, so I'm in the dark.

What about this...I'll remove the wheel, take pics of what I find & perhaps u folks could tell me what in fact I do have & recommend what I should do next?

I'd like to get rid of these wheels & just use the OEMs. The idea of using these repo's (that cost me $1,600+$120) was because they were alleged to be safer than the OEMs

Hang on. We'll get ya fixed up. All of the wheels are safe. It's the installation that's dangerous. User error can be the kiss of death on knock offs.

Post up a picture of what's under that left front wheel and let us have a look.

I peeled the top coat of paint off a '65 396 that we were getting ready to restore. Thank goodness we were taking the car apart rather that putting it back together.

I have a 11 1/2# composite dead blow hammer I use. Usually if you drive the car a few miles and retighten the wheels you are OK. I always mark the spinner and cone with a little clear fingernail polish. That way you can see movement.

Favorite nickname for the wheels is "Quick Falloff Wheel Option"
