If you don't have the 8th edition of the NCRS Judging referenence manual, you need to buy one and study up on the judging process. It is extremely well written and will clarify any confusion on how any given component should be scored.

The only variable will be the experience level of the judge looking at your car. As mentioned, the judges have the responcibility to fully understand the process before they deduct for anything.

I think I will, I am in the midst of a big mod on the car now, engine almost done. I have all the factory parts and have stuck them away but not interested in running heat risers and Carter carb, So have stored the starter, intake manifold, Distributor, and a tonne of other parts that are all original and will leave them for the person that would like to take it back to original.
I need power steering and the only way to do that without changing out the oilpan on a 63 327/340 or do something radical is to use a Borgeson, so I will do that and store the original steering box.

The only real thing I am concerned about is how many points will I lose, (or possibly gain), with a continental kit and Whip aerial with a Raccoon tail on it? Pom pom balls are not listed, under dash purple lights. To show you how inclomplete it is, where is the dog that blinks with your turn signal that sits in the back window, or even the basic necessity of the 2 big furry dice? I don't see it in the book?

One question for the judges here, how long can the curb scrapers be? Lets get down to technical stuff

Dennis, I'm fearful you have picked the wrong organization. NCCC may very well better fit your priorities if you can get past that "stop clean" thingy they do at their judged events. Otherwise I feel you can find a class where the above mentioned upgrades will be welcomed with no deductions.

Deductions? I thought I would gain points? I guess the curb feelers are out then? Does the AooooGah horn use the screws for the old horn, or the chrome ones in the kit? So many questions, no I am sure this is the right place

WOW!!! we are turning ourselves into the 1% and 99%. My ORIGINAL 62 FI car has lots of non-original parts but IT LOOKS ORIGINAL I still love it!

I think Roy Braatz was the resident expert on accessories. His car Top Flighted with all sorts of add-ons. Too bad he's moved on.

Sorry to hear that you seem so disillusioned with the whole idea of restoring classic Corvettes to the as GM manufactured them standard the club espouses.

Hopefully you will be receiving your new membership packet in the mail very soon.

Perhaps the concept of the club will become more clear after reading that material.

I have two trains of thought. One is that it is his car and he is free to do with it whatever he wants. I have seriously modified (butchered?) a Vette or two in my lifetime. Maybe a '61 with six tail lights, front bumpers removed and the grille opening closed up by 3" or so, a Weiand tunnel ram with two Holley 660's on top of a very radical 358" engine, or a 1974 with Eckler recessed headlamps, Hooker headers with 4" side pipes, another 358" highly modified engine, etc.

Enjoy the car for what it is to you. Some people are total purists and enjoy their cars that way, and some enjoy their cars as they want to modify them.

For those of you that don't know it, as a vocation, we restored Corvettes for about 20 years. Duntov, Bloomington Gold winners were our some of our products, but we also worked on, and helped owners, to modify their cars the way they desired. I enjoyed the modifieds as much as the originals.

Main thing is to HAVE FUN! Remember it is all about the people!. Use the cars as a means to bring the people together.

I am actually not disillusioned at all. My 63 when finished will be a great driver and will have all the original parts in storage. As times goes on I will continue to buy missing original parts but likely not fit them. Not because I hate originals but I have physical disabilities that require me to have PS and PB. I will be swapping out the Muncie and putting in a 4 speed overdrive Transmission because of a bad knee.
I actually would like to have a totally restored 63 but could not drive it. My 66 was all original but was done in 1975 when parts were readily available. My 70 and 72, the same.
I am not selling things like the original starter, alternator, distributor, intake manifold water pump, radiator, wheels, expansion tank, brackets or AFB. They will all go with the car.
If I treated differently or looked down upon because of it , I think that is wrong, and should be corrected. It appears some people have been treated like that. At least from some of the responses.

Its why I joined NCRS, I want to find out what I have wrong on the car, and buy the right pieces over time. Many other people are like me here, medical issues, or financial issues it really does not matter. If someone wants to be part of NCRS then just because they do not drive something that is 100% it does not mean they would not like to have it someday.
If I have a Holly carb instead of an AFB I don't think I or anyone else should be snubbed. Walking Cane,rectal removal surgery, is not a fun operation

Some people have 3 advantages, good health, money and were here first. In 1975 I could have easily restored a 63, it was a piece of cake because GM still held the parts. Someone embarking on a restoration now, needs far more money and far more time. So those sub-humans that show up with a 300HP air cleaner on their 340HP may be still looking for the 340HP Aircleaner. Or heaven forbid maybe they like the horns better?

As was just pointed out, this is supposed to be fun, not some sort of class struggle, as far as I am concerned. NCRS should have a "HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET IT HERE AWARD" for those that can get some of these cars going again. So if a guy shows up with a bird cage a frame and a blue tarp with "eyeball sockets cut out" he should be given the biggest round of applause and the best score Assuming of course blue tarps have a GM number

I've been to many chapter, regional and national meets all over the US and Canada, including a good number where I was part of the national road tour. Many, many of the cars on site or on the road tour (including my own) were not involved in Flight Judging. Not once have I ever heard a negative comment about someone else's car, except in jest. The fabled stories about cars and and owners being shunned over some horrible originality transgression are just that.

Michael,

I'd bet that at least 50% of the Corvettes awarded top flight in the last 5 years have more than just "a few repro parts" installed. As mentioned in previous posts a good repo part can pass with no deduct at all. (the Dewitt restoration radiator is a good example and there are many others)

If you have some good suggestions regarding catching the younger generations interest, we would love to hear them.

Nope. Promote it while you are sill alive. Take a kid for a ride. Next time a young person shows interest, take the time to indulge them. Show them how wild that 50 yr old car really is. They will be hooked!

I have only been here less than three years, so I am hardly in a position to offer any advice whatsoever, but I will anyway.
Don't always believe everything you hear. Give it a little time before you jump in ragging on your new club. Many people seem to have the notion that this club, and the people in it suck. I heard it from some long time vette enthusiasts before I joined. I lurked on the TDB for a while getting an idea whether I would be comfortable joining the group. Once I joined in, it was a bit longer still before I felt comfortable speaking up on a topic. By now I have been to several meets on all levels, OJ'd, judged and been judged multiple times. I have learned a ton about these cars, and yet know that compared to many (most?) in the club, my knowledge level is barely more than basic.

Still, I really enjoy the meets, and the people I have met, some of whom I have become friends with. My car is an unrestored, not totally correct driver that I have been making "improvements" to for three years (with restored old original parts as well as repro parts). It is now almost exactly how I want it, and is still not, and never will be as long as I own it, totally correct, from an as-manufactured standpoint. I love it as it is. I enjoy driving it to meets and showing it in Sportsman class or having it judged. And I really enjoy driving it in general. Not one time have I seen or heard anything from anyone to indicate my car was not welcome or looked down upon at meets. In fact, it has gotten quite a few compliments.

I think you will experience the same thing when you get involved in club activities. Make your car as you like it, and bring it out to meets and show it off with pride. You will enjoy the experience, and people will enjoy checking it out. I guarantee it... I look forward to meeting you at a meet sometime. (ps. don't take this to mean that I think that everyone is perfect. I don't. This group is made up of humans after all.)
