Judge my engine bay ....I can take it....

    Hi fellow members......

I am planning a possible trip to Europe this summer. My car L79 1966 Roadster , is an original engine , drive train , driver with over 250,000 miles on it. As I am going to be meeting many NCRS members in Europe....I though I would make my car as "correct" as possible without worrying about condition..........I drive my car year round and it gets dirty. Safety and reliability comes before "correctness" .

I am showing the engine bay first and will make corrections if possible...........

In a way this will be online judging..... I will take better photos later once I get an idea of what you need to see...

(Don Hopper) go at it.......it is your chance to do a C2

    Thanks for your help
    ...........

What are you looking for regarding critisism? Unoriginal items? Cleanliness? Items orientated wrong? What? Give some direction. Pic is too dark to see good detail.

Re: Judge my engine bay ....I can take it....

Hi, I am looking to make the car look correct.......... I use my car year round so being clean is not to be counted.....having the correct water pump or other parts that I have replaced over the last 42 years....... not criticism. just what is missing and what is there................I can decide on how far I want to go....taking into count the way I use my car......it will never be judged in a NCRS meet...

I hope to post better pictures....tell me specific areas and I will do close ups.....we can then move on to other parts of the car....

I'm always leery about making judgments on someone's property for fear of the obvious. But I'll take a shot at this.............first thing I'd do is remove what APPEARS to be an aftermarket (I don't believe the technology existed in 1966) early cruise control (what looks like a chain/cable in one photo) system. That's just my opinion.............mind you--I don't believe cruise controls should be added to any car later. But then I hate to see a C2 "tricked out" with all manner of "modern stuff". If a modern suspension or engine (or steering column, etc) is desired then go modern and buy a C5 or C6.....same with cruise control. I guess I'm close to a purist......if it didn't leave the factory installed........leave it home. Shoot the messenger, I guess, if I've offended.

OK Jack since you called me out.
Without digging way down into the weeds, the most obvious thing, (other than the cruise, and knowing your legs are worn down and you need that) is to remove the flexxy aluminum insulation from your exhaust pipes, and paint the top of your lovely aluminum radiator black. Put some tower clamps on the top upper radiator hose. From a very general standpoint, you will be almost there. You might put a 327/ 350 HP decal on the air cleaner lid too.
And it is Hooper, not Hopper.

ps, send me the $45 per above.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe 66 small blocks didn't use air cleaner decals

NO No no.... the decal goes on the valve covers for my year......I will put those on when I am done cleaning

The cruise control must stay....only way I could have driven 35,000 miles in 18 months.......I understand it is not correct.....my life with corvettes has always been the drive...not the show.......

And most of us who have had these cars for 40 or more years....never cared about numbers and correctness.....the car had to get us to work.

Having said that....I will consider doing most of the cosmetic changes......still waiting for some one to call me on two parts.......very obvious...this is going to be fun...........I hear $45 do I hear $40 ........ do I hear $40.......

                    Jack-

I think you may want to install a steering column, judging or not. I was almost positive that the car had one when you were here.

                      Jack -

Water pump pulley and master cylinder cap should be semi-gloss black, and the thermostat housing should be silver.

Re: Judge my engine bay ....I can take it....

No offense.....but my fake hips, fake knees, ankles require it.........or if I were a few inches shorter.....

But....many will be looking at a car that has been to all 48 states....in stock in engine, frame, suspension ........just has my favorite colors.......I will try to replace the water pump.....I have a old 26 but it needs to be rebuilt......the alternator is a replacement.......10th one I believe.....300,000 miles uses up a lot of parts.....

Any way...this post is to help me present a driving midyear corvette , correct in most ways, but more important, spreading goodwill in Europe for NCRS......and doing what many or our members dream of doing.....but their car gets in the way.....

So♦....keep the comments coming and I will do what I can to correct the car.......How ever there are areas....clamps etc.....where reliability is more important.....

My car is subject to extreme stresses........below O* to 120* temp.......long stretches without mechanical support........upgrades are used when not in view......or when original " repro " parts...are found to be below standards for fit and use...

My car for the most part is the same car that I bought from the 1st owner in 1970......It came with original tires...everything.......

I just kept it running for all these years......and a lot more....I hope.

                        Thanks for your comments
