Re: numbers starter area on 66 bb
Carl:
These numbers are most likely the engine block casting date. It is in the format of MONTH, DAY OF MONTH, AND YEAR. The month is a letter with A=January, the day of the month can be one or two digits, and the year is a single digit. Example: J76 is October 7, 1966, and B126 is February 12, 1966 These letters and numbers are generally "upside down" when viewed from below the car.....so approach it in this manner. Sometimes a mirror can help.
Look carefully and closely, as some of the letters and digits can appear different than they actually are (due to various casting flaws/issues, etc). What is the date that is on the engine pad which shows when the engine was assembled?? This may help to narrow down the engine casting date range.

Re: numbers starter area on 66 bb
Carl -- if I remember past posts, they had something to do with the piston sizing, as there's a number stamped opposite each piston opening, on the oilpan rail. Definitely a factory stamp. the other backwards "C" and the "+" might be rebuilders markings.
Re attached pic: So are you saying your numbers are stamped somewhere in this area, hidden by the starter when bolted in place ? the previous pic with the "10" is in the shadow, at the right margin on this shot.Attached Files- Top
