1962 Serial #2 Silver Corvette Mystery

despite Restoration professional's extensive inquiries to over 50 contacts in his network and professional background we have not had any luck finding out exactly what this car is and why we see such odd differences in the car as the restoration moves forward.

Just a short list of the Odd and uncommon very particular conditions in the body:
o 1962 is written in large black numbers inside the door, rear and interor panels
o There is a turcoise fiberglass cloth along the front and back sides of the car (and in multiple locations inside the car) instead of what should be resident matting- this was clearly done at the factory as the locations of this material are percision accurate and only apply to where the chnaged in the body were made from the 61 to a 62- but why?

That low of a serial number on a production build would certainly have been a pilot car. Pilots were at times built prior to the final availiblity of the production parts, The brakes were an available option, and it is not unusual to see low production options on the Pilot cars of the era. "Customized" would not be an accurate term if the mods were done by Chevrolet. Need a LOT more research into the car's background, previous ownership etc.

      Hi Ed,

      Welcome to the NCRS.

It sounds like you have a very unique and valuable car. With a VIN #0002, it definitely was a pilot run car. Don't know about 62, but most cars of that era produced 25 to 30 pilot cars. Most were painted the same color for identification purposes, and were shipped to Detroit Engineering for evaluation. If they were not destroyed during testing, then at some point they got sold to the public.

You will find much help on this forum - there are many experts here and a wealth of info. Speaking for others, if you could provide some more data on your car it would be very helpful. I'm sure the folks here (me included) would like to see some pictures, both of the car and the fiberglass cloth you speak of. Also, what is the cast date on the engine block and the front pad stamping? This should be one of the first 327 engines produced, and the dates should be August/September 1961 - or thereabouts. Assuming you have the original engine. NCRS has dealer order # info and other factory info that is available to members, but unfortunately that does not start before mid year production in 1962, so that info is not available for you. But there are many 62 owners here that I am sure will be very interested in your car. Glad you became a member, and please get us some more info on your car. -Dan-

Hello Ed and welcome to the NCRS. I would be interested in more information on your silver 62 #2 . Hopefully GM (Chevrolet Div.) can come up with more information on the early Corvettes. The date codes should be August 61 on that car. Thanks for sharing about your car. Rosco

I'd like to ask about the seats and door panels - are they a narrower pleat than normal '62 pieces? I have run into this on 2 early cars, both in the first 10.

Around January of 1979 (and probably earlier), Terry Michaelis had 1962 VIN # 00001 for sale. Black/Black fuel injection. In one of his flyers he shows price reduced from $18000 to 12000.

I understand that this car burned to the ground, sometime later.

Wayne I have wondered for a long time what became of that car. Was it white or almond biege when Terry had it? If I remember correctly it had a 7017355 FI unit with it as opposed to the 7017360.

Generally in this timeframe, Pilot cars were not directly sold as "new" cars released to dealerships, they were used internally at GM or for display or engineering purposes. Sales, of some cars (many were sent to the "Crusher") were typically thru auction at a GM dealers only auction, or possibly thru employe sale as used cars. As the years went on, this process became much more restrictive especially after passage of the motor Vehicle Safety Standards Act, (MVSS)

It burned back in Ohio during Bloomington (before it was Bloomington Gold) in 79 or 80.

Back at that point in time there was a guy in Racine,WI who swore he knew the car from the Racine area, and that it was born a 340hp car. He was a knowledgeable individual by the last name of Morris. He believed that the 7355 unit was added in Napoleon/Toledo.

Hi Dan --- digging back thru a stack of TMCS flyers from 1975-79 (hard to say 'cause he didn't date them), the earlier ads for '62 #0001 don't mention colour [spelling for benefit of a fellow-Canadian ]. Earlier issues start out saying was "originally" a fuel car. Black only mentioned in 1979 timeframe. He had it at least from 1976. Also had '62 VIN 00013, with original engine; so probably means # 00001 did not have its original (by omission).

Very interesting reading these old ads; 1978 L82 Pace Car reduced to $18K. At the same time you could buy a '65 FI with KO's for $13.5K; or a '67 L68 coupe for $5.6K.

                        Ed,
How about more information such as:'
Engine cast date, pad stamp and is engine equiped per stamp pad info?
Date codes on glass , transmission, distributor, starter and so on.
Gauge info, tach redline, temp gauge scale.
Holes in coves for spears (61) versus 62 cove trim, holes for actual cove trim.

Found an actual TMCS ad from 1977. Notice 2nd car down in right hand column; a '67 BB converted to small block ! Tankers from 5 to 8.5 grand .
