1972 seam sealer putty for behind the t top halo

I am so close to finishing a 5 year restoration of my 1972 steel cities gray coupe and just re-installed the windshield after cleaning, stripping the windshield frame, spraying with etching primer, and then POR15 the whole thing. Luckily I didn't have rust issues at all and won't have to worry anymore about that crap! Anyhow... on the rear of the t top halo, the stamped stainless T piece under the t-tops, there is a groove between it and the rear fiberglass part of the roof and there was a greyish putty like sealer there when I removed it. What are you guys using to replace it and where are you getting it. I can not find much info other than using 3M black strip caulking.

    thanks in advance,

    Sully

    i used the 3M caulk.
I also took a paint pen (from Michaels) and colored over the caulk to make it have a factory look. It held up really well for over three years.

      Hi Sully,
Before I took the 'halo' trim off my 71 I too thought the sealer was gray.
But once I took the 3 pieces off I discovered that it appears that a black sealer was used. The portion of the sealer seen along the halo with the trim in place appeared to me to have been degraded to the gray color by the sun and dirt sticking to it. The 'fresh' sealer exposed as I pulled the trim up was black.
I think you've seen these pictures before but I'll post them again.
It's good to see your on the D.B.!
      Regards,
      Alan

Rear/underside of large ss trim. Notice short piece of foam sealer remaining too.

Center .Notice the 'track' (adhesive?) left behind by the foam strip seen in the first picture.

Outer End. Photo makes it look a bit gray but it was black material.

        Allen,

thanks for the updates, you always have great pics of that pretty 71 of yours! I have always appreciated your contribution and help with my questions. I am going to use the black 3M strip sealer on it now. I can see what you mean with the sun exposure causing a color change over the years. Soon my coupe will be back on the road, but man, it's has been a long long road in the restore!

        thanks again,

        Sully
