OK...Finished the Resto on my '68 Shift plate..and I have to say, with all the info from this great group of folks, it looks GREAT!!!! SEM Satin Black...Taped off the edges with 1/8" tape, and on the Lettering at the bottom? Took a gentleman's advice and just rubbed some Chapstick on them...Again...GREAT!!!! Rather than scrape the Chapstick off with an Exacto Knife..I placed Masking Tape over them and just LIFTED the paint off...Gotta say, the Chap-Paint came right off! Couple of small spots here and there..Just went at those with the knife. I'd strongly suggest this method as you can chip the paint on the plate itself with one false move....

All all, the shift plate is Stellar!!! Diving into the console next

      Thanks all!!!

Glad this project worked out well for you, Bob! Can we see a photo or two of the finished product? Might also be a nice Restorer article, so that others can benefit from your experience.

BTW, on your other related thread, I had forgotten all about how the '68 shift console plate was un-grained. I can't decide whether that makes restoration easier or harder. Surely, the quality of the paint work is more evident when there's no grain, yes?

          Hi Bob,

Would like to second the motion on some before and after pictures of your projects. Let me know too if you need any '68 pictures that would help you.

Thanks! Well, Just how does one put a picture up here? On the quality of the paint, can't really say as I've not painted anything with grain. I'd guess if you take it easy, thin coats...you'll be fine. By the way...I would up with three coats...Looks great!

            Thanks,

Re: Flat or Gloss Black for C3 Shift Plate?

              Hi Bob,
              About pictures....
Have you looked at the 'picture how to' information that's listed under the FAQ tab at the top of the page? There's good info there.
Some people do it slightly differently.
I created an a account at a photo hosting site like Photobucket. (It's free and very easy to too.) I then upload pictures from my camera to the site.
If I want to include one in a post, I start the post, then go to Photobucket and 'copy' the 'IMG' code for the particular picture I want to be seen. I then come back to the DB and 'paste' that 'IMG' code after my message. At that point you'll see your message AND the whole 'IMG' code; if you click GO ADVANCED in the box below your post you'll see your message and picture in pre-view. If it appears the way I want it to be I then click SUBMIT REPLY; and it's done.
Once you get a little practice in the steps it goes very quickly.... much less time than it took me to describe it.
              Regards,
              Alan
