Flat or Gloss Black for C3 Shift Plate?

Going to be stripping and repainting the shift plate on my '68. Not sure if this will take a flat or gloss finish. It's already been done, but not a good job.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I used rustoleum satin black on my console, came out nice but never had it judged.

On another note, I used the SEM Trim Black for my firewall last winter, real nice stuff to work with. There was recently a thread about re-dying/painting a parking brake console using the same stuff. Is SEM trim black a good choice for all interrior pieces??

                    Hi Lynn and Bob,
I believe there are 2 different SEM products that pertain to this discussion.
One is the black for firewall black-out, metal trim, etc.; and another for interior vinyl, and soft & hard plastic parts like the e-brake console.
I realize that people speak very highly of the SEM products but I still like Krylon #1613 too.
These are original parts that have been repainted with #1613.
                    Regards,
                    Alan

I know that Alan knows this, but realize that Krylon #1613 as currrently sold is not the same as the "old" #1613 that Alan used.
That one is supposedly #51613 and sold thru industrial stores.

I've used both the original #1613 and SEM Trim Black and still have my preference.

                        My unsolicited $0.02:

Alan's Krylon results look fantastic! If I had anything other than perfect results with the SEM Trim Black I've used, I'd try the Krylon. From Alan's photo and my experience, it looks to me that BOTH are great choices.

I will say the at the SEM flows like no paint I've ever seen or used. I used it for my engine bay/surround drip rail @ the wiper door and for my doors' leading edge black out too. Judges didn't like my masked (hard vs feathered) edges on the drip rail, but the paint judged just fine.

I've restored a few shift console trim plates/ash tray doors with SEM, and each went very well. I masked the outer perimeter chrome off with masking tape and while still fresh, I rubbed the SEM off the smaller, inner chrome edges (ash tray, shifter cutout, engine info badging) with a posicle stick. I used SEM Trim Black for e brake console restoration as well, which worked great.

                          Hi Patrick,
I think you have the numbers backward.
The 'old' formula Krylon #1613 is still available, just not through retail outlets as it was for so many years. The Krylon semi-flat black that's now available in retail is not lacquer, (as the old formula is), and is numbered #51613. It's, (#51613), completely different in the way it sprays, covers, and recoats.
The original #1613 is still available through 'industrial' outlets. I buy it from 'Film Tools' in California. I've bought it in cases of 6 cans; and even with shipping it's cheaper per can than what I was paying for it while it was still available locally.
What I like about using #1613 is since it's lacquer I can vary the degree of glossiness (or lack of) out of the same can by how wet I spray the coating. Also, since it's lacquer the coating is very thin which I think mimics the original finish on the various interior bezels better than enamels.
                          Regards,
                          Alan

Either way I wanted him to be aware that the one he wants - if he chooses to use the Krylon - isn't the one available at Wal-Mart.
