    '67 Getting Dash Together

I've got the dash stripped down, cracks repaired and painted with SEM Trim Black. Bead blasted the clock housing, the clock is back from having a new mechanism installed and the gages were overhauled by Roger Scott. I had the cluster housing rechromed and I painted it with SEM Trim Black and assembled everything. Oh and the speaker was reconditioned as well.

The new dash pads and clips from CA arrived yesterday and they look great and seem like they will fit perfect! As for installing the new clips, is there any trick to that or do I just use a flat nose pliers and pinch them?

    Scott,
Just squeeze them with the pliers while holding them firmly in the hole grabbing the dash pad.

No magic on the clips. I used needled nosed pliers to pinch them. Pretty much straight forward.

Bead blasting the clock housing is not a good idea unless you replate it as it is an electrical ground and will rust without a finish.

Scott, your speaker is missing the "Choke" (transformer) This is a requirement on these corvette radios for proper impedance matching

Thanks Stephen, I hadn't realized that. I see that LICS sells a complete speaker assembly. I dont remember if my speaker had a transformer installed before I shipped it off for a new cone or not.

Before you purchase make sure its the same speaker style. Most aftermarket corvette speakers have a larger round magnet and won't pass judging. The impedance, according to Jerry Rudbeck, corvette radio service expert, is also questionable. I was "gigged" on my 67 at the nationals a few yrs ago. Never thought the judges checked but the judge used a mirror to see the speaker. It was very obvious. Attached are 2 styles of aftermarket speakers, both with chokes but not correct.

Another point: Check your AIM for the proper orientation of the speaker mounting, choke location, toward left or right of the dash.

Stephne, good point, I made that mistake and its not that easy to flip it once you all back together.

Walter, If you have your original speaker w/choke, you can get it re-coned for a reasonable cost. There are many sources. Just "google" speaker re coning. I used this vendor. http://www.nostalgiasounds.com/ He may have a spare choke too.

I don't have an original. I have dash out and want to replace current speaker with best possible replacement unless reconditioned are available without borrowing from my 401K

Stephen, Do you have an item number. I have the hardest time finding anything on ebay. I cannot look through the thousands of listings and evidently don't know how to filter. Regards.

I've used S & M Electrotech (Greg Thompson) with good success, reasonable turnaround and fair pricing. Just sent him two more radios.
