1968 carpet question - rear of coupe

I checked the archives but could not find an answer. While replacing the carpet in the back of my coupe I purchased the mastic backed jute pad. This covers all of the two wheel wells, the bottom and the back wall. Following the AIM I cut the holes for the tray hinges (there are no plugs or holes for plugs in my car). The problem I have is that the storage compartment frame will not fit. The outside of the frame is 36 1/8 wide (left to right) and the wheel wells are 36 1/2 apart. So there is only 1/4" space for the carpet on both ends and not 1/2" thick jute on each end.

Does anyone know what the unerlayment looked like on the wheel wells? I suspect that it stopped above the shoulder belt bolt and did not cover the vertical part of the wheel well near the storage compartments. The originals were lost and not documented and the AIM does not detail the jute.

Also, does the jute go all the way up the back wall? This seems to make the window tray fit really tight.

Russ - I discovered just yesterday that i may have the same issue with my '69 coupe. I had a little extra time last evening and thought I would do a trial fit and couldn't get the frame in. Since it didn't go in easily, and I didn't have much time, i deferred to the weekend. I will be interested to learn more from you & others.

I have completely restored the seats, headrests, seat belt guides & console so if i can help, let me know. I would be glad to return the favor with all the tips & advice I have received.

When I removed my carpet in the 68, The backing material remained on the wheel wells in the area highlighted by the arrows- is this what you are looking for?

It is hard to see, but that looks like just a sound deadener and not jute padding. Is that correct?

Not entirely sure what it is but it appeared to me to be some sort of "rubber-like" backing between the carpet and the Jute. When I removed this stuff, Jute was behind it glued to the wheel wells in this area. Above it was just glue. So, I'm not positive, but this is what I found under my carpet.

P.S. Keep in mind my car was repainted at some point so this may be non typical- just sharing what I did find under my carpet.

I think it is original. The mastic deadener was located between the jute and carpet in my 68. I was just hoping that the wheel wells near the storage compartments had the jute removed and only had the mastic.
