    Re: pure stock drags

I have attended these drags the last two years in Michigan. It is real neat to see all these old muscle cars run . Almost all the cars look extremely well restored to their original specs inside and out. I have a 69 L71 that I was thinking about participating. After talking to the corvette competitors , I found that these cars are what they look to be and much more. The rules call for OEM components but allow internal parts much upgraded from my L-71 and even L-88 of yesteryear. Same with transmission and rear end. All the Corvettes were running stock type rear/suspensions with major improvements in axles etc. The wide oval tires looked OEM, but seemed to be a very soft, sticky compound. The Penningtons were very nice to talk to and very willing to talk about their beautiful race cars. All in all, my 69-L71 would not be competitive without major upgrades to the entire driveline. In my opinion, you restore a car for a pure stock drag car. It looks to be an organization wanting to grow and expand which is terrific for our hobby, but a totally pure engine etc could not be competitive.

With great difficulty. That is one of the reasons I retired when I met Turbo-Regals with seemingly unlimited boost...

And then there is F.A.S.T. racing where there are 2 classes of cars:

        1. Factory Stock - similar and restricted as PSMCDR.
        2. F.A.S.T. - allows displacement changes (strokers) internal engine mods like head porting, and other stuff that can't be detected from outside. Certain chassis and tire differences from "stock" are also allowed.

One of our MI Chapter members, Jeff Morgan, has participated for several years with his 1971. He has spent a lot of time tuning the car to do well. Based on my discussions with him it takes a lot more than just showing up to do well.

One of my neighbors (Larry Weymouth) has run an amazingly original '71 LS-6 THM coupe in that series for the last six or seven years with fair success, and will be running a '69 L-88 (like the Pennington cars) in this year's series. This is not an inexpensive undertaking, but it's lots of fun.
