63 L84 Lower choke tube attachments

I believe that the lower choke tube on 63 FI cars is attached to the exhaust manifold stud with a jam nut and washer. Can someone please describe the proper washer (type, outer diameter, and finish) and the nut (thickness and finish)?

    Thanks,

Same as flat washer that holds your fuel filter bracket on, John DeGregory carries them.

      Thanks,
Mike I am not sure on the flat washer, does the AIM show a flat washer? I have only a 3/8 nut, Thats about half the thickness of a regular nut. the stud thats on my 63 shp motor is short and really does not seem that a washer would fit. If it does it may be a thin washer.

Ed, unfortunately, the AIM doesn't show the attachment in an exploded view, so its not clear. I have the thin (jam) nut that your describe, but I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be a narrow flat washer too.

Dan, I know 63 and 64 filter attachment washers are different, I have (and the AIM shows) a narrow flat washer for 63. I think a star washer is the 64 part, but I cold have it backwards...I should write these things down

          Michael,

I'm still not sure where the star washer myth came from on the 63-65 fuel filter bracket stud but I'm pretty sure no such washer was ever used for this location. The washer was a plain/flat style.
I don't have a 64 or 65 AIM handy but I'm pretty sure the same flat washer was used for the fuel filter bracket stud and the exhaust manifold stud.

Thanks, Michael, it probably slipped through my fingers during restoration, so it became one of those leftover, found-on-the-floor, "where the heck does this go?" parts. Now, I just have to dig through mountain of old fasteners that I sent out for cad plating and find one single 5/16 flat washer. Wish me luck....

            Thanks,

              Michael,

If you have an early production 63, (and I seem to remember that you do) you may actually need a plain unplated washer for the fuel filter stud. The part number changed in early 63 from a 9414322 plain flat washer to a 120394 zincad plated flat washer, the very same one used for the choke air intake pipe at the exhaust manifold stud.

The change occurred in production on 15 January 63.

Michael, I do have an early car, your memory is working great. I think I plated the fuel filler washer, as it was corroded, but, I can strip it easy enough.

The jam nut on the choke air intake stud is plain, so a plain washer would make sense. I found another plated one in my pile of parts, so I'll strip it also.

                Thanks,

                  Michael,

The choke tube flat washer was plated for all 63-65's but the washer for the fuel filter for early 63's (up to 15 Jan 63) was plain, unplated. After 15 January, the fuel filter washer became the same as the one for the choke tube which was plated.

So after 15 Jan, both were plated and became the same part number.

OK, plain one on the filter, plated one on the choke tube. I'll only strip one.

Has anyone got a pic or drawing of any of these parts?

                    Thanks,

Mike and Mike, Good info as my car has a star washer on fuel filter stud and no washer on choke heater pipe.

While I think the washers I have now are probably OK, I'd still be curious to learn the outer diameter of the original washers. If someone could measure one and post that info here, that'd be great.

                        Thanks,

Thanks, all, but I guess I found the answer to my diameter question; The original washer, p/n 120394, has an O.D. of 13/16, an I.D. of 13/32, and a thickness of 5/64. Here's a pic of my parts, both the filter washer (unfinished) on the left, and the choke tube washer (cad/zinc plated), each of which meets those dimensional specs.

                            Michael,

I found the same info for the 120394 washer with the same dimensions. I can't find any info on the 9414322 unplated plain washer for early 63 fuel filter bracket though.

I have to guess that it is the same size as the 120394 but not plated.

Here's what the paperwork has to say on the washer.

"Plated washer presently released for other usages replacing plain washer at below usage to eliminate low volume part".

Release 120394; Cancelled 9414322; Part name Fuel filter bracket washer.

"Effective in production 15 January 1963".

I agree, Michael, neither attachment needs a "wide" series washer, so the part number difference was probably just a plating change.

                              thanks,
