    Re: Radiator Support Washers

That is exactly what I am looking for. I may have found a set of 4 that will be delivered to me on Friday. If they are the correct ones, as I hope, I will post the sellers information.

        Alex,
Did your thick washers come in yesterday?

Yes they did. Thank you for asking and all your help. I have one additional question. On my 67 big block, am I correct when I say the water pump stud should be on the top passenger side of the water pump?

Adams - pg 355 top picture taken Nov65 good example of the two washers
pg 413 no indication of 2 washers & no date of picture
pg 419 the 2 washers are gone, no date of picture
So the NOV 65 is the best and is a GM picture, remember some of the pictures in Adams may be of later dated cars, ie after 67MY.

Another source may be Corvette News and period magazines of the BB. Since these large washers were substituted would expect the lock washers were deleted otherwise the bolts would end up too short.

Thank you for the info. It seems that there are several variations of these thick washers.

Now that's a good question - need to get some pics of this too and when did this really start...

                  Alex,

You are correct. The stud was used in the upper right (passenger) side of the water pump. This stud would be used for almost all passenger car applications for the negative battery cable.

During the engine paint process, a small cap/mask was placed over the exposed threaded end of the stud that masked at least the threads and the front of the hex portion.

Thank you Michael. It is currently on the driver side, top hole. I will switch it over to the passenger top hole. Should I remove the paint from the exposed thread? IMAG0295(1).jpg

                      Alex,

Even though a big block engine was not going to be used for a passenger car, the forward threaded portion would still have been masked. I suppose it was easier for the folks at Tonawanda to do this to all the engines instead of just those for passenger car.

Maybe it's just my old eyes but is the threaded portion on yours too long, and possibly too fat? Is it 5/16" or 3/8" thread?

The stud is 9/16. I just had this judged at Lake Tahoe in June and got Top Flight. The judges mentioned that the stud was in the wrong spot. I just couldn't 100% remember where it was supposed to go. They didn't mention anything about it being too long. Of course you never know. I hope I have the correct stud.

which of these studs are correct?

And then...were there engines in the 60's (BB) that had more than one stud?water pump stud 2l.jpg

How about the slotted end stud???

                            Ron,

The stud on the top is the correct one. 3/8" on the long end and 5/16" on the short end. The pic below is of an NOS correct stud.

I don't remember any extra studs, or slotted studs on big blocks at least for 65-67.

Thank you. Currently my stud is painted. It looks like it should not. Is that correct?

Alex, just the exposed threads should not be painted...the nut should be painted. ARA
