Bill as I posted above my original owner 1970 had a new surround piece installed in 1979 and when I checked my 70 a few days ago the replacement surround panel has them.

The notches are TOO uniform to have been hand trimmed & also to time consuming. No reason not to have those in the mold. As many Corvettes were produced from 1968 to 1972 it would mean lots of extra work. Again ALL 3 of my 1970 Corvettes had original paint when I bought them & one still has. I know I am beating this to death but some posts indicate that they were hand ground or aftermarket fenders.

Terry, I did a preliminary check and so far have found what appears to be the smaller notch on both fenders. It was dark and I only had a small light and my dog was bugging me to take him for a walk. I'll take a closer look this weekend and see if I can get some pictures. It does feel like there is some filler or maybe some thick undercoat in that area. I'll know for sure this weekend.

Ken, I might have the wrong image of this process, but I am thinking just like metal pieces their would have to be a operation to remove the excess material on the edge after the press molding is complete. I am not picturing a hand operation, but if it was it could easily and quickly follow a template with a router or even a sharp knife. Since we don't know for sure and no one has as stepped forward -- we may never know. I can tell you for sure TFP is they are there and they all look raggedy.

TERRY Again why a separate operation? The could be two raised bumps in the mold. My opinion is that the jagged ones were boinked by tires. I would like to hear from others if theirs are smooth or jagged. If a router & jig was used the edges would be smooth not jagged. Don't think a knife would cut it Pun intended.

Both of my '71's have original paint and the two notches on each cars front fender lips are smooth, not ragged at all. To me they look like they are molded in, and part of the fender manufacturing process.

I have never seen a ragged one . and I think they were hand cut at the plant . Remember the big tire option (I dont know the option #) in 78 on the anniversary and pace cars . They cut half of the front fender lip out with a grinder , no two were were the same .

We are talking 68 to 72 here for ALL Corvettes. Again why not mold in the notches? Guess some can't see the forest for the trees. REBA & JOHN where are you?
