    WCFB in need of help

What prompted me to rebuild my 59' WCFB was from doing too much sitting in the garage I would go to start it and it would start fine and then die after it used up the fuel in the primary bowl. Iwould tap on the carb or take the top off and reinstall and things would be fine for awhile. I figured the primary flout was sticking and time for a complete cleaning and rebuild. Well thanks to manuals provided by Phil I complted the rebuild.I replaced everything in the kit except the ball bearing and retainer beneath the accelerater pump. Well When I first start it it's smooth and happy , once I believe the secondary well fills up you can visibly see fuel being sucked out of the secondary jets and the engine floods. I took the top end off to check the floats and if anything they seemed stuck close. It seemed to matter which side of the float assy. that I

placed the needle connecting clip. So in closing, does any body have an idea why my wcfb is pumping fuel out of the secondary when it is not wanted or needed.

    Jim -

Sounds like a sunk float in the secondary.

Sure does sound like a sunken float causing the flooding. Remove the top cover and float. Shake it around and you might hear some sloshing.

But you said it seemed stuck closed, which may be a indicator that it could be hanging up along the sides of the float maybe when it's open too. If so a few careful side bends may solve that.

Could you reword this...."It seemed to matter which side of the float assy. that I placed the needle connecting clip."
Do you mean "not to matter"?True if so, it doesn't matter about the clip.

Had a center Holley in a 435 do that right after a restoration/rebuild. Original float was sitting a long time before rebuild and had a pinhole in it. Took a few hundred miles of use then it became a problem flooding like crazy.

You were exactly right John, I removed the fuel from the float tried solder on the seams. It passed the submerge test but I'm thinking a replacement is in order. The murphy's law set in and I was not getting any fuel from the fuel pump. I had a spare pump, but once I removed the old pump but I couldn't get th the rod that works the fuel pump. Do you know any tricks for getting the rod up so I can install my replacement. Thanks for the fix on the WCFB....Jim

Jim. There is a bolt on the front of the block that you remove that goes into the cavity where the fuel pump is attached. You will need to get a longer bolt. hold the pump push rod up against the cam lobe an lightly tighten the bolt to hold the rod up against the lobe, install the fuel pump REMOVE the longer bolt install the original bolt and you should be in business. I will try to find some pictures that show the procedure.

Photo below shows the location of the shipping bolt hole on the front of the block that can be used to hold the fuel pump pushrod "up" while installing the fuel pump. Use a 3/8"-16 x 1" or 1-1/8" bolt, remove it when done installing the pump, and replace it with a 3/8"-16 x 1/2" bolt with a little sealer on it (which is what was there originally).ShippingBoltHoleSBC.jpg

Re: WCFB in need of help

The further up you can get the cam lobe before you install the rod and the bolt, the easier it will be to compress the spring on the pump. If you have a friend bump the ignition with you holding the rod in the hole, you will be able to determine when the rod is inside the block at the maximum point. Install the bolt and the then the pump.
