I am going to buy reproduction exhaust tips for my 71 LS5, I am assuming I need the 2.5 inch exhaust system, however, I am reading that the exhaust tips are 2 inches. Can someone explain to me how the car was originally done. In other words how do I get the correct exhaust tips on my car if it has the 2.5 inch pipes. Thanks in advance.

Your 1971 LS-5 does use a 2-1/2" exhaust system. This includes the front and rear exhaust pipes. However, it does NOT include the muffler outlet pipes to which the exhaust extensions ("tips") attach. All 1963-73 Corvette muffler outlet pipes are 2" regardless of the size the exhaust system pipes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 71 Exhaust Tips on 2.5 inch exhaust?
It may seem silly Frank, but from an engineering standpoint it makes some sense. The exhaust gasses cool as they travel through the pipes and muffler and as a result of that cooling they take up less volume. I have never measured the muffler's internals, but I suspect they may only be 2-inches anyway.Terry- Top

Reba has the '68 off road mufflers on the Frog. Sounds very good, mellow, not loud. Were purchased when they were still available from the GeneralDick Whittington- Top

Re: 71 Exhaust Tips on 2.5 inch exhaust?
hey ---
if you want to get the best reproduction exhaust tips for your car, purchase a set from Richard Fortier. He advertises in the Drive Line. he is the only guy out there that makes a set damn near exact to the original assembly line tips. They are not stainless - but carbon steel chromed and welded as originals were. Well worth the extra dollars IMHO...
