    Lock washer or Not?

On a 66 small block, the JG calls out a lock washer on the upper a-arm camber bolts. I don't see one in the AIM (UPC 3, A2) called out, it just calls out the nut.

    What is correct?

    Rob,

My July build date '66 has lock washers and thick (non-prevailing torque) nuts.

Rob, Remember the AIM does not list each component of a sub-assembly, only those additional parts required to assemble the car on the line.
Similar questions keep popping up and the pro's clarify. These details however seem to be deep into a thread and not easy to find, just keep asking.

Early production 66 cars had a lock washer and hi-nut. For later 66 cars, the lock washers and hi-nuts were replaced with a self locking nut. I don't know exactly when the change occurred on the line.

          Michael,

I strongly believe the lock washers and hi-nuts on my July 21 build date '66 (VIN 26xxx) are original. If the change to the self-locking nut happened in late '66, it was very late, or there was overlap during which time both hi-nuts and self-locking were used.

I don't know when the change occurred but I always assumed it was late in production.

The 66 AIM is no help as it shows the new design bolt and self locking nut with no record of change.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have been under the impression that the lock nut began with the '67 model?

                  Matt,

The nuts and washers in your photos look exactly like the ones on my 26xxx VIN '66.

                    Gary,

My car had the lock washer and nuts just like Matt's photo when I pulled them off. But, when I checked the AIM, I assumed someone had added them at some point in the past. I will put them back on the car. Thanks for all the help.

                    Regards
                    Rob

About what VIN is your '66? Is it close to mine?

FWIW, my 67 is a B-23 (September 23) build and it has the lock nut.

                              Rob,

Until someone shows me some examples of original '66s with the self-locking nut, I'm going to assume that the use of the hi-nut and lock washer continued thru the end of the '66 model year. Given the July 20 build date of my '66, it seems like the combination of the nut and lock washer was used at least up until the last week or two of '66 production.
