    Marc,

Welcome to NCRS Judging. Recommend you order a Judging Reference Manual from the NCRS Store https://www.ncrs.org/shop/ and review Flight Judging along with the Judging Reference Manual.

Hope you have good penmanship. OJ's often are the scribe.

    See ya at Kissimmee.

When I got the 1971 I ordered something from the NCRS, a book. it was for 1971. I think it had other years on it. Cover is green. I opened book and read about P02s. I believe I have it and will take it out and start reading.

Ahhhhh rowdyrat RINGS A BELL!!!!! I have crossed paths with him on another forum. He does know about my new ride I picked up. I will need to shoot him an email and ask him my exact question I posed here. Although, I got great answers here I am certain hearing a response from the team leader can be very informative.

            See you in Kissimmee!

Bring a mechanical pencil and a good eraser. That way you'll always have a nice sharp tip to write with, and can cleanly erase any scribing mistakes. Yes, pencils are often provided but the tip will break at the least opportune time and the eraser will fall off. Been there, done that.

i started out at the chapter level - neat experience- as an OJ - the individual doing the judging may ask your opinion - read and understand the question to them - you will enjoy it - you wil learn a lot your first time out ..... enjoy the experience --

Re: What can I expect being an Observer Judge at a NCRS event?

Sounds like that could be the 4th edition (most current) Tech Info Manual (TIM) for '70-'72 cars. I look at it almost daily in order to find detail about correct parts I need to order/bid on etc. The more familiar you can be with the TIM for the cars you'll be judging, the better. You actually use that TIM as your guide during judging to fill out the score sheets. It's THE book for judging the car. The Judging Reference manual is a close second in terms of value to a new judge. It covers CDCIF and other critical things already mentioned in this thread.

Like you, I've just recently crossed over to the dark side by buying my 1st classic Vette. I've loved Corvettes all my life since having had my 1st ride in my Scout Troop Leader's War Bonnet '71 T-top when I was 13. I took Corvette Museum Delivery of my 2007 Coupe and joined the NCRS immediately, knowing I really wanted an old Vette and would get one some day. I searched for my '70 454 for over 4 years, though interuppted for a year while I deployed to Afghanistan. I found the car in Nov, flew out to Washington state with a close buddy to inspect the car, and brought it home via transport just before Thanksgiving. Remarkable some of the parallels between our car search/purchase stories and timeline. Sorry to hijack your thread a bit, but I know you'll find the NCRS as friendly and rewarding as I have. BTW, I'm just getting more involved in the NCRS Tech Forum, but I've followed your story on other forums as theblackvette. Quite a saga, and I've enjoyed following it. Good luck in Kissimmee!

                        Marc,

Oh, and one more caution for your 1st time on the judging field. Ask another judging team member before you try to move/open/close/actuate/unsnap/etc anything on a car. Typically, the owner will do that in case some damage occurs during the process. Examples of horror stories I've heard about and/or seen personally are:
                        dropped wing nut down the open carb; destroyed friction holding sun visor up (ie, judge pulled down the visor and now it swings freely like a pendulum); judge's name tag caught and snagged on seat upholstery; belt buckle scratched the fender (always tuck in shirt over belt buckle or better yet never wear one judging); judge tried to remove spare tire lock rubber cover and split it/destroyed it;

In general, don't pull, push or move anything on the car until you get some good experience from the wealth of expertise on the judging field. Take off all name tags, belts, etc too. I'm overly cautious about this stuff, but I never want to be the one to have to show the owner how I just damaged his or her baby!

Marc, being an OJ is the single greatest learning tool you can have. I learned more being an OJ than I did after reading countless books. You can actually SEE the item that is being discussed as opposed to reading how it's supposed to look. Learn, look, listen but don't LEAN or engage the judges in conversation during judging. Most, if not all, judges will be more than happy to talk to you after judging is over. Judges need to get through a certain amount of cars each day (depending on the number of registrants) so it's not good for an OJ to interfere with the schedule.....Kissimmee is an amazing Regional and it draws some incredible cars. Meet with the Team Leader and the judges on the field for the OJ meeting each morning BEFORE judging starts. Judging is wonderful, but being an OJ is a real educational experience. Bring a pad and pen, as I took notes during the judging of all the things I learned that day. You can't remember everything, so the notes will prove to be invaluable. Good luck, and look forward to meeting you!!! ARA

Mr Shorts is more communally known as "the real deal" and words can not describe him. Have no fear; you will know him when you see him.

At the risk of tooting my own horn: On the day that 1970-72s are not being judged you might consider attending the Advanced Judging Seminar. Don't let the word "advanced" throw you. Come and see.

                              Wow, Mr Shorts eh? LOL!!!!!!!

Hey any chance he will show up in this thread and take a bow?

I registered for the beginning judging class. I don't want to bite more off than I can chew.

I am a go getter, so maybe I will look into that advanced judging seminar.

Hey, don't I have to hang out with my Sportsman car? If I am doing all these classes my
1971 corvette is gonna miss me!

Hahahaha you been following that crazy saga on that other forum? Great people over there, too. A few knuckleheads though, but love 'em all.
14 and 1/2 years looking for a car. Amazing eh? I was recently digging up old want to buy threads and saw one almost 8 years ago. LOL!

Simply, put I wanted specific things on a car and had extremely high standards. I wasn't gonna compromise and remember I had other corvettes in the stable to enjoy
so it wasn't like i was vetteless.

Glad you enjoyed my search. The NCRS is a different ball game all together than that other site. Even here I can tell with all the seriousness of the NCRS I read about and
all the stories I heard, I think there is a time for fun, but has to be done at the appropriate manner.

I am so looking forward to my first NCRS meet. I can't believe I am actually driving my 1971 to Kissimmee next month. She has had a LOT of practice being driven.
