Maybe that's why we're confused about where #1 should be... it changed over the years.

I'm going to take a guess and say it changed because of the "new" style ignition shielding that started in 1968?

Here's a pic of my 68 L36 set to 4 BTDC. After looking at the AIM I think it may be off one tooth, want do you think?

You might try clocking it 1 tooth clockwise. That way the VAC port will be to the rear of the plug wire bracket, and the dist. cap screws oriented like AIM.

Plus your current orientation will be even more counter-clockwise if you decide to advance the timing a bit.

I think you're right, should put the can in the center of the open space. I'll have to put that on my to low priority to do list.

            Thanks, Doug

The dist. gear has 13 teeth, so moving it 1 tooth will turn the distributor 28 degrees. This means the #1 tower will move to a little more than midway between where #8 and #4 are located now.

Sounds about perfect. Thought about leaving the rotor where it is, rotating the body 45 degrees CW and moving each wire one spot CCW but I think thats moves it a bit too far and would put the can too close to the rear wall of the shielding, too bad as it'd be much easier. Looks like I'm gonna have to at least partially pull the distributor.

                  Doug,

You'll need to completely remove the distributor so you can turn the oil pump shaft.
