    Re: notice anything unusual?

Kent..probably an early replacement..it is in quite good shape..but has not been down since 1967. The frame is untouched.

      Re: FI drive cable???

      Clem

My factory race car has the casing in place.. and my GM pictures of the other factory Corvette racecars also show the FI drive cable casings in place.

However..your comment sounds like a racers edge.

        Re: FI drive cable???

Dr Dick Thompson, at one of our MAC/NCRS meets years ago, (at Summit Point, WVA before he retired from Dentistry), related that he and Yenko never ran with the FI distributor to high press pump cable housing, just the cable. much easier to replace out on the track if the cable was only item in place. i've tried cable only on my 57 FI vette and it works.wouldn't want to run the car thru the desert storm, but short bursts in relativly dust-free conditions ok by me. That day at Summit Point, Dick drove my 57 on the course at 70-80 mph(he was gettin up in years then) and he related he rarely used the brakes on the c-1's he drove in the 50's and 60's. steered them thru the corners with the throttle. he tried it at summit point that day on Cooker repo bias-belted 6.70x15's and scared the geeen apple crap out of me. hear he's still alive at his Florida retirement horse farm. nice guy.hellofadriver. mike

Re: Correct!!! Guy on the left...is Carrol Shelby

neat response Frank. i may have overestimate the longevity of the points at full 12 volts but back then i was cheaper than i am now and probably ran them longer thatn i should have. thanks for renewing the old memories. mike

            I think you're right.

Assuming the ballast resisters are identical (and they don't appear to be), and their resistance doesn't change with temperature (and I think it does a little), then the voltage at the coil would be the same whether one or both was working. While they are both working, however, the current through each would be one half of the current drawn by the coil. That would make each resister run cooler because of the shared load.

By the way, that distributor may have an 889 tag on it, but the bottom part of the iron housing looks like a 908 to me.

              Interesting thing in the picture

              Joe,

If you look real close in the picture you will see the seat belt tougue end hanging out from under the closed door. Just under the 6, and about 2 feet left of those marvelous sneakers. You know they don't call them "sneakers" anymore, but us older NY boys still do.

                Re: 1967 License Plates

That 57 looks to still have its shortened steering column (based on the steering wheel to side post clearance).

                      889 distributor

Jerry..not the best of pictures..but see distributor tag below 889 6K20. I will post another picture showing the tach cable coming out the back...and through the fire wall of the 54.

Did 889's and 908's use the same casting? I am ready to learn...and Maybe we can all learn something from these old cars.

                      Joe

                        889 tach drive

Jerry..this is the back side of the 889 distributor. It seems like I may have discussed this with someone before..where 889's and or 908's were cast with an emboss on the back side that could be drilled and tapped for this very purpose..however...a few have said they have never seen an 889 with a tach drive.

                        What is your experience?

Bill..here is a better picture of the dual resistor set up. I wish I could ask George what he had in mind..but I doubt he is still around.

                            My limited personal experience...

...is that 908 lower housings had a tach drive, and the 889 lower housings did not.

The few 889 lower housings I've inspected had a rounded, very short cross-shaft rear boss with a welch plug like a 905/906 lower housing. It could not be drilled and tapped with a cross-shaft rear seal recess in order to install a GM tach drive coupler. There wasn't enough iron in the boss.

The 908 lower castings I've seen have all had a relatively long tach drive boss with a sharp outer edge around the coupler seat.

                                Re: 889 vs 908

                                Jerry

Having never pulled this distributor out. if I did..are there any casting marks or #'s that would help.

I wonder if Joe Lucia's archives would show any part history of the 889's vs. 908's that could establish a timeline.

I am certainly open to the fact that anything could have been done between 57 and 67..but I don't think anyone changed the id tag way back when...and I can't think of a scenario why a 908 would be retagged as an earlier 889..but sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious ..like the dual ballast resistor.
