    1960?

Mike, can you tell in the photo that it is the '62? I ask because I'm looking at a picture of Dick on the side of the road in Sebring 1960; digging at something on the driver's side of the car, with a screwdriver, 8" crescent, an apple(?), FI drive cable (WITHOUT casing), distributor and distributor cap (in order). Top Tank is without ribs and is unpainted. 4320 unit, so this must be #*%)&.

My 57 has had the column changed before I bought it. What are the measurements for the regular and shortened steering columns ? From the dash to the wheel or ?? .

        Re: 889 vs 908

I'm not implying anyone tampered with the 889 tag on the upper housing. I think someone swapped the original 889 lower housing for a 908 casting to get the tach drive.

This was during and shortly after the GM 4360 FI recall fiasco. Chevrolet was scrambling to replace all the 4360's they could with 4520's and 4800's. I'll bet they even took some 4360 units and removed the troublesome Coasting Shut-off Valve on top of the fuel meter. I notice that this unit doesn't have one.

Jerry..that sounds like a rational way to achieve the tach drive! Are you going to Kissimmee?

            Re: 1967 License Plates

Bob..there were special 56/57 shortened column/steering box assemblies ordered from Chevrolet Detroit / Gear and Axel...for the factory race cars. If your car has one of these ..there will be an extra stamping on the steering box.

Then the 58 or 59 to 62 columns were made shorter...for production. Somewhere I have the lengths ..but I will have to find it. Maybe someone else will find the measurements and post before I do. Maybe Roy Braatz has it.

It is also possible..your steering column was cut and prepared for racing from a standard 56/57 column.

            Nice cars!

              Re: 1960?

Loren--is it possible that two racers broke down under Dick Thompson? Probably so--the one I have is from the rear (the car's and Thompson's, for that matter) and there's no definition of anything inside the engine bay.The one I have is definitely a 61-62, and I don't have it in front of me, but am almost sure that it was my car in 62--however, memories can play tricks. (As I'm sure you know, since you're on the opposite side of 60 from me.
              Regards,
              Mike

                Jerry...You are right

After examining my 2 889's..the one with the tach drive has a much longer rear boss about 1 1/2 inches and the other is about 3/4" or so...just by eyeball measurement.

The tach drive 889 tag is dated 6K20 and the other is dated 6K13.

                Good eyes!

                You are the man!

Happy New Year..and don't let the turkeys get you down.

I don't "do" travel much anymore

Joe, I don't think you'll find my decrepit buttocks at any swap meet or NCRS event in 2006. I'm not completely burned out on sleeping away from home, but I think I've done enough of it for this life. I'd rather concentrate now on FI restoration, creating a business website, hurricane home repair, getting fatter, watching TV, and (best of all) staying at home.

My Column was flat black in colour, maybe it was a new GM piece ( way back when.........) or came out of a little newer Vette like a 59 or 60 ?

                        Thanks. Bob

                              Re: Shortened Steering Column

Bob, I don't have the measurements - I just remember from owning a '56 SR-1 in the 80s (before it was known by that name). I recall there was just enough room on the column between the turn signal collar and the speedo bezel to put a hose clamp (like to hold a tach). As Joe mentioned, my 56 had the extra stampings in the steering box. I also recall (looking from the side) that the steering wheel was nearly even with the door post; stock wheels are probably 3" beyond it.
