Re: No love for the 68?

The first time I remember seeing a 1968 Corvette was on the Bewitched TV show, I was ten years old at the time.

It was this beautiful yellow convertible, I could not believe Chevrolet made a car that looked so amazing.

The full episode can be seen here. Unfortunately the car is only seen in one shot, about 8:20.

I was 22 and working at my first job after college. My coworker asked me if I had seen the new Corvette. He said “ It looks like they took the coolest slot car they could find and made it full size.”

            Rich,
I love the 68 also. I did a 68 vette compressor I had and thought I would put it on E-bay. It was all restored and with a new dated foil. Not a bite, but what was funny was that every compressor on E-bay said " fits 68 corvette". It's a beauty and I wish I owned the car it go's to.
I was told that the 67 was supposed to be the 68 body style but was to late. There is a guy in town that has a 68 (well hidden) with aluminum engine and factory headers. Saw it once and he showed me computer documentation. What a beast.
Don't want a bunch of inquiries about it because I don't want to bridge my friendship. He also has a original 12 cylinder Spitfire engine new in the crate so I know he is not a fake. He said car was a few made for some factory race or whatever.

Thanks for that story. I’m curious, is the 68 compressor different than the 67?

We all know the 68 story but I think it’s true the the last cars were significantly different in features and some would say quality, than the early ones. I believe GM wasn’t able to ship the coupe version until a few months after the convertible.

And, speaking of Spitfires, this one is based in the same hangar complex where I have my Cub. It’s the oldest flying Spit in the world.

                  Rich,
The 68 and 67 are the same compressor other than the foil and lack of the yellow TEST OK CHEVY that is stamped on the 67. Pulleys, clutch, case, all the same.
I built a 56" wingspan Spitfire in the early 60's and competed along with doing airshows back in the early 60's. Flew for 4 years till the inner elevator belcrank cable wore thru the belcrank bushing. It was spectacular when it hit the black top.

Thanks for sharing this Mike! In 1967, I was 10 years old and fell in love with Elizabeth Montgomery and the '68 Corvette. The video made my day.

Update: According to the internet, this episode was filmed July 20, 1967... 3 days after my 10th birthday.

                    Update #2: At 3:02 you'll see a '67 convertible Camaro, '67 BB Corvette Convertible, and a '67 Impala 2 door hardtop.

Re: No love for the 68?

Many years ago a bunch of us Corvette types were sitting around with nothing better to do. There was a nice 68 427 car in the shop , an early car, like #400.

We decided to make a list of the running changes for 1968.

We gave up after three pages.

Also, one point that always bugged me about 68s is that NCRS does not deduct for the incorrect top front window weatherstrip. Every restored car I have seen has the 69 and later weatherstrip on it. The 1968 top front window weatherstrip (both coupe and convertible) is unique to 1968, and clearly visibly different in configuration. When I mentioned this I was told that the 68-69 judging manual already had too many things in it.

If you still have the list, send it to me please.
Also, if you have a picture of the top front window weatherstrip, send it. I'll plug it into the manual.
Do you still know know where #400 car is?

We created the list in 1989; it is long gone. I have no idea where serial #400 is. I seem to recall that the car in question was actually #407, and I have no idea where it is either.

I have the picture of tre weatherstrip somewhere. I'll find it and send it to you.

There was a beautiful 68 roadster at the Wisconsin Chapter meet over the weekend with a great story. It was a very original car that had great care all of its life. I fell in love with it.
