    Re-stamping pads

A thread over on another site made me wonder when re-stamping of engine pads for deceptive purposes is thought to have really begun. It certainly was before 1985, the first time I saw it, hopefully someone here will have a firm idea.
    Thanks,

    Re: Re-stamping pads

    I'll play.

I tattooed an "EK" suffix on the pad of an engine I built for my Five Seven Chebby back in early 1983.

Deception wasn't the goal. I did it for me. I wanted everything under the hood to appear correct. I still have the car and it still has its "EK" suffix engine.

      Me too.
I re-stamped my 57 - 150, 283/283 when I had it gone through. Like Mr. Lockwood's above it is also an 'EK" stamping and I'm up-front about it.
At one time someone had surfaced the block, I believe it is better to have it stamped and know the history rather than no stamp. The block, heads and all other components are marked, date coded and stamped correctly for this car. I know the nature of the components in this engine and I'm not misrepresenting anything as I fully disclose what has been done to it... Al

I'm guessing early 80'S when the prices started to go up. I have seen many in the day being shipped to owners.

Gentleman in Chicago was stamping pads before the '80's using characters bought from the OEM supplier to GM

Its probably gone on for a long time ... seems it wasn't so heinous until car values skyrocketed and ribbons became so admired...
Frankly, I kinda miss the days when you could put a period correct engine in a muscle car and not even worry about some numbers on the pad...

                      Ken,

I am so pleased someone got my point. It really sucks when one has to explain the joke. The whole idea falls flat if one has to explain it.

It is great to see your posts, Ken. They always remind me of the old days before money became the driving force of the "hobby".

You can still put a period correct engine or even a non period correct engine and not worry about numbers on the pad. matching number.jpg But when someone does it in order to profit from other's lack of knowledge then we have an issue.

The earliest published ads I've seen so far have been March 1984 for engine stamping (Okla.) and April 1984 for trim tags (N.J.). I haven't checked before 1984 yet.

The same can be said for "rare" original parts. I have many times heard "This teak wheel is original. The guy bought it 30yrs ago." Yet I have an old Vette Vues magazine from 1975 with an ad selling reproduction teak wheels. Not sure how somehow 1975 quickly became 45yrs ago !! Boy how time flies.

                              Why not "re-stamp" everything?

I've been home-printing money, property deeds, birth certificates, Top Flight Certificates, and car titles since the seventies. Strictly for my own entertainment, of course. I would never think of deceiving someone with them. I just go out by myself in the garage... in a closet... in the dark... in the nude... and admire my fake creations.

Wanna buy some for your own pleasure?

Seriously, I think the re-stamping bull**** is the worst thing to ever happen in the car world. I first noticed it in the late seventies. Back East was making fake Trim and VIN (I think) tags by then too.
